On 16 & 17 June 2018, Sefton Park will once again be taken over by the music and culture of Africa and the Caribbean for two free days of fantastic live music, DJs, dance, workshops, food stalls and a range of traders in the Oyé Village.
This year’s lineup is packed withe female talent, with Cape Verde’s Lura, Senegal’s Marema, Sona Jabarteh from the Gambia and Liverpool’s own Remée join Guinea-Bissau’s Binhan and young Merseyside MC, Nelson. More artists are due to be announced in May, so watch this space!
Reggae legends Inner Circle, celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, will close the festival in style; their signature pop-oriented Jamaican beats and boundless energy are sure to make their set one to remember!
Africa Oyé is the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002. With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world.
