Bess, young, black and part of a new generation growing up in post-war Liverpool, faces age-old racism amidst new opportunities for work, and personal, social and sexual exploration.
Returning to Liverpool from her home in London, Bess ponders her early life, from innocent au pair to a middle-class family through to becoming a call-girl in the local clubs in the 1970s, to a rebirth in consciousness following the Toxteth Riots of ’81, and the joys and troubles of her life in between.
Rose Thomas, mother of 3, was born in 1942 and brought up in Toxteth, Liverpool. As a mature student Rose developed her writing skills through a three-year University-based creative writing course.
Now in her seventies, after a long and varied career, this is her first novel.
