Led by professional interior designer Ainsley Bonham-Lawson, explore the world of Interior Design in this three day introductory course looking at interior style, materials and textiles, creating floor plans and designing to a brief. Suitable for beginners.
Program
Class 1 – Intro. What is Interior Design; How do I Find my Style?
The basics of what interior design encompasses as a career, what types of interior design there are (commercial, residential, hospitality, etc.), and an overview of different design styles.
Project: Students will take a personal “style quiz”, learn how to cohesively combine various styles and then create their own design board that reflects their style preferences.
Class 2 – Materials and Textiles
A hands-on look at the different types of materials that are available in the market (will focus on fabrics, carpet, wallpapers, and tiles). We’ll also talk about textile/pattern making and how textiles play a crucial role in interior design & decorating.
Project: Students will learn about types of pattern repeats and then design and create their own patterns using basic stamps.
Class 3 – Creating a Floor Plan & Designing to a Brief
Students will learn the basics of drawing to scale and will be able to recognise the most common symbols on a floor plan.
Project: Students will select a brief (either a bedroom, living space, or multi-use room) and create a floor plan for it. They will then use magazine imagery, materials and paint chips to build a mood board for their scheme.
