The Play Writing Lab — free, online creative writing workshops with writer and performer Yolanda Mercy

About this Event

The Play Writing Lab is a friendly and practical session for adults where you will use your lived experience and the theme of Play as inspiration. Whether you’re a keen writer or a total novice, Yolanda will guide participants in writing for performance techniques and leave with the beginnings of a 5-minute piece that you can later submit for the the Play Scratch Night. Writers will have the option to perform their work, or it will be performed by professional actors.

About Yolanda Mercy

Yolanda Mercy is an experienced writer and workshop leader. She has run workshops for over 10 years, and has worked with a variety of people within the community and professional sector. Her experience of working Nationally and internationally, has supported Yolanda to help a wide variety of people unlock their writing potential. Yolanda’s sessions have been described as “fun, informative and inspiring”.

Who is this workshop for?

Open to anyone over 18, who is keen to explore writing, empower their voice or improve their wellbeing. No previous experience is required, just enthusiasm to write.

You can choose from two dates:

7pm — 8.15pm on Tuesday 20 April

10am — 11.15am on Sunday 25 April

Workshop Info

— Each workshop will last 75 minutes and take place on Zoom.

— You only need to book onto one of the sessions.

— There are limited places, so if you can no longer attend please cancel your place through Eventbrite so someone else can take your space.

— Before the workshop please ensure you have the most up to date version of Zoom (a free video chat application which you can download from www.zoom.us). You will be emailed a link to join the workshop, ahead of your workshop date.

Play Scratch Night

The Play Scratch Night will take place during LightNight online, showcasing 5 new pieces. The works will be selected from the participants who attended the workshops, and take place on Zoom. Writers will have the option to perform their work, or it will be performed by professional actors. The Play Scratch Night will take place on Friday 21 May 2021. To watch the performance you’ll be able to book your free ticket from 5 May at www.lightnightliverpool.co.uk.

About LightNight

This event is part of LightNight, Liverpool’s free one-night arts festival which takes place on Friday 21 May from 5pm.

LightNight invites audiences to stay up late, as our museums, galleries and studios throw open their doors to stage a free trail of special events for all ages, exploring the theme of Play.

Over 100 special events will take place in-person and online including hands-on workshops, exhibitions, tours, talks, installations and much more.

Produced by local social enterprise Open Culture, this year’s festival explores how Play can offer a space to create, re-imagine and find novel solutions to global problems.
