Supporting the development of new work by Black writers in Merseyside.
As part of the Black Joy season, Talawa and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse are offering seed commissions for two writers of African or Caribbean heritage to develop a new play, showcase work and build networks with the creative community in Liverpool.
The offer
– 2 x £1,250 seed commission
– dramaturgical support to develop your idea
– rehearsed reading at the Liverpool Playhouse Studio for invited audience
– networking events with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, Talawa and an invited group of local Global
Majority artists
– invitations to in-house Everyman & Playhouse productions.
The ask
They’re looking for writers who:
– have a new idea (or early work in progress) that they want to develop
– live in Liverpool City Region, and are exploring themes and topics that speak to our communities here
– would be supported in their artistic development by this opportunity.
The timeline

– All applicants will be invited to a networking event with team members from Talawa and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, and to see Play On! at the Liverpool Playhouse (Wednesday 16 October).
– Four people will be invited to discuss their application in more detail at interview (w/b 4 November).
– Two people will receive a seed commission (decisions w/b 11 November).
– Writing and from December to March, with rehearsed readings w/b 24 March.
Application is via an online form, submitted either in writing or via video or audio file.
They will ask you to tell them about:
– you as an artist
– your idea
– how you want this opportunity to support your artistic development.
They’ll also ask you to submit a sample of your writing that you feel best represents you. It doesn’t have to be a play (you might previously have written for screen, for example), but they’ll be assessing applications with their suitability for stage in mind.
