Open Eye Gallery works to create, share and champion photography as a way to communicate, collaborate and learn. They’re one of the leading photography organisations nationally, and they’re growing fast.
They’re actively rethinking what a contemporary gallery can be. they produce exhibitions, long-term social collaborative projects, publications, and university courses, locally, nationally and internationally.
They welcome over 65,000 visitors to their gallery every year, over 450,000 to projects in other venues, and more to their online spaces. They proactively take risks to spark crucial conversations and enable creative expression.
Their scale allows them to be fleet and innovative, and their partnership model enables us to be responsive and expansive, so they consistently punch above their weight.
They work with people to push for social change. Bringing different voices, photographers and communities together, they establish projects where the collaborative process is just as important as the final product.
Their programme begins with people—with local, regional and international communities — and it is built around the agency of photographs and photographers.
Their international presence is burgeoning. Expanding on relationships established during 2023’s EuroFestival, when their project HOME created the largest exhibition of Ukrainian photography in the UK across Liverpool City Region. We then took this exhibition on a national tour, culminating in the UK Parliament. An expanded version is currently showing across Preus Museum (Norway’s National Museum for Photography). We have continued our Eastern and Central European focus with projects such as No Iconic Images and Self-Defined further developing this highly relevant strand of our programming.
They act and communicate in a way that is generous, nurturing and friendly. They want everyone to make themselves at home in our spaces and feel comfortable using them. They seek to include, always.
As much as possible, their staff, space, online channels and networks are open and free for people to use. Their open processes and platforms make it easy to contribute to and co-author their programme.
They work with local residents and international partners to support representation, empathy and inclusivity. They fully aim to reflect our values, building a unique programme that explores themes of social cohesion, climate justice and cultural parity, always learning as they do so.
