UC Crew from St Helens were successful in receiving funding from St Helens Library Service and Cultural Hubs to run a heritage project in St Helens.
It’s no ordinary project, they are researching the St Helens Cultural Music and Dance Heritage of Northern Soul, Break Dancing and Street Dancing which span from the 1970’s till present day. This is open to St Helens and surrounding areas.
They want to hear people’s stories about how they discovered Northern Soul and visited Wigan Casino in the 1970’s, how they won Break Dancing battles in their local youth club in the 1980’s and how they performed Street Dance routines in front of large crowds in the 2000’s.
They want people to share their stories, photos, memorabilia and newspaper articles to help us tell the story of how these cultural music and dance movements started, how they evolved, people of influence and the venue where everything came to life.
All the evidence and stories collected will contribute to the first exhibition in St Helens dedicated to Northern Soul, Break Dance and Street Dance.
The exhibition will take place from 22nd November until 4th December at Chester Lane Library, with a fantastic launch event on the 21st November from 5.30 – 8.30pm, which includes DJing and Graffiti Art workshops, Break Dancing Battles and Street Dance Performances.
