One of the festival’s 2019 commissions brings together Milapfest and Movema for a joyous celebration of the ritual of Indian marriage, the Baraat; an exuberant outdoor wedding ritual culminating in a Milni, the meeting of two families.
In the Great British Baraat, a unique mass street-dance take on this ritual, Movema, local dancers and Milap favourite the Bombay Baja Brass Band will meet on Church Street at 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Friday 17 May to combine what they do best – music and dance! And you can be part of the unique mass street-dance by joining the special classes in the lead up.
To be part of this exciting event you can sign up to Movema’s weekly Fusion Classes at LIPA on Wednesday evenings 6 – 7pm 27 March – 15 May or join the special open dance session on Sunday 5 May 2 – 3.30pm at the Bluecoat. All ages and dance abilities are welcome (children guide age 8+).
In these fun, friendly classes you will learn specially choreographed Bollywood routines that have be made accessible for all ages and abilities to join. Classes include a warm up, learning choreography in a cool and accessible way whilst working with colourful props and creating a great workout to world beats. Plus, in all of the sessions you’ll be meeting and dancing with new friends!
Wednesday evening classes are at LIPA and have a small charge with online booking offering early bird discounts. Sunday 5 May at the Bluecoat class is free. To find out more and book onto the sessions please visit www.movema.co.uk
