As part of the National Lottery Funded project, Littlewoods Heritage: Inside the Dream Factory, Metal and Liverpool Screen School (LJMU) seek an artist/filmmaker to create a new work that responds to and celebrates this iconic building’s history with local people.
They want an artist/artists collective who can create a visual montage of the stories and memories of the people that once occupied the building. The chosen artist/artists will collaborate with a spoken word artist and a team of oral historians to tell the story of Littlewoods to a new generation, before the building begins its new life as Littlewoods Studios.
Criteria
- Applicants can be individuals or groups/collectives
- Commissioned work must be delivered by June 2020
- Applicants must propose a new work
- Applicants must have experience working with film and/or archives and proposals should take into account the notes below
- Applicants must have a desire to engage local people in the creation of the work and to share the heritage of the building to a wider group of local people, potentially through the design of workshops
- Applicants must be open to collaboration with spoken word artist Jeff Young
Littlewoods held important connections to the community of Liverpool and beyond, not just in terms of employment, but also in terms of civic and community life. Staff activities included company choirs, beauty pageants and sports teams. In particular, the Moores brothers were held in high regard by the city, as they owned Everton and Liverpool Football Clubs.
Alongside the sharing of the heritage of the building there is also an aspiration to address issues of educational inequality through the project through a series of targeted workshops in local schools and youth centres, content from which could be incorporated into the final film.
The film will need to be broadcast quality with the possibility of incorporating the building’s architecture into its presentation at the launch of the new Littlewoods Studios. There is also additional budget available to submit the film to festivals following the initial local premiere.
