Join the opening of two exhibitions at the Bluecoat and the Bluecoat Display Centre, part of a programme celebrating the life and work of Liverpool ceramicist Julia Carter Preston who had a long relationship with the arts centre.
Made from Scratch at Bluecoat Display Centre brings together a selection of Julia’s work from local collections, alongside contemporary artists using her sgraffito technique and printmakers and jewellers expanding the conversation into surface and pattern. Upstairs at the Bluecoat, Julia at the Bluecoat presents archival photographs and films together with a selection of commissioned ceramics and portraits of Julia in paint, sculpture and drawing, most of them never publicly exhibited before.
These two exhibitions are part of Celebrating Julia Carter Preston, Ceramicist, a programme marking the centenary of her birth. Coordinated by the Liverpool Hope Carter Preston Foundation, the exhibitions – also taking place at Hope University Creative Campus, Victoria Gallery & Museum and the Walker Art Gallery, are accompanied by a symposium exploring Julia’s art and its significance to post-war British ceramics, which you can book tickets for here.
