The Royal Standard (TRS) is Liverpool’s leading artist-led charity providing opportunities and studio space for our region’s artistic talent.
They are looking to recruit a Chair and additional Trustees to help steer the organisation during an exciting period in its development. There are great opportunities for them to expand their reach and provide support for more of the artists they work with. They are looking for people to help us to maximize this potential so they can better deliver on their aims. Are you the person that can help lead this change?
Chair
TRS requires a leader with vision, determination and passion to help deliver their ambitions for the future. You will Chair a team of 8-10 trustees & work with a team of 6 voluntary Artist Leads who manage a day to day studio and programme of arts activity. As part of its commitment to developing artists careers, TRS also provides affordable studio space for 40 artist members who are regularly consulted and represented by the Artist Leads.
They are looking to create a permanent paid role to support their volunteers and the charity’s activity. They are also looking to secure long term sustainable premises that better support our activities and ambition. Their ideal candidate would have the skills and knowledge to help us achieve these milestones.
A passion for the arts or background as an arts professional would be advantageous as would an understanding of artist-led practice. However any experience in successfully taking charities through periods of investment and development would be welcome.
Treasurer
Key to their fiscal responsibility they require a treasurer to oversee our finances. The Treasurer will maintain a strategic focus on their financial resources and their management; working closely with the Chair, other Trustees and our auditors.
You will also lead a small finance committee to ensure all monies for multiple projects are accounted for and annual reports submitted. As a charity they have several different revenue streams some of which are restricted funds and grants.
Artists & Arts Professionals
As an artist-led organisation they feel it is vital to have artists’ voices represented that reflect the diversity of practice and experience of those artists they support. They want artists to join our board who value artist-led networks and can lend their experience and knowledge to further the reach and offer support to the activities they champion.
TRS welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and would love to hear from applicants who belong to groups underrepresented in the arts.
Key Commitments
- The Board will meet on average 4 times per year and they would expect board members to attend a minimum of 2/3 meetings (in person ideally or virtually).
- Support their activities by attending events and exhibitions where possible.
- Act as an advocate for their organisation and its activities
- Be able to commit to a minimum 2 year term on their board
- All Trustee positions are voluntary and therefore unremunerated.
About The Royal Standard
The Royal Standard’s mission is to make Liverpool a great place for artists to practice. They do this by providing the city’s largest studio network but also by acting as a platform for emerging talent at a national and international level through exhibitions and exchanges and events. A big part of what they do is work with partners to achieve their mission.
Some of the organisations they have worked with to provide opportunities for artists include Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Biennial, The Bluecoat, Newbridge Projects and critical writing journal The Double Negative. Community organisations we have worked with include Refugee Women Connect, WHISC and Blueroom. The Royal Standard formed in 2006 and became a registered charity in 2013.
