The Liverpool City Region (“LCR”) Combined Authority (“CA”) wishes to commission a Fundraiser to support fundraising and secure sponsorship funding in support of The World Reimagined (TWR) project and related activity.
The project is part of a national initiative involving 8 UK cities and city regions and will deliver TWR in August-October 2022. While the project will follow and be guided and complementary to the national TWR programme, it will assume a distinct, fresh, Liverpool City Region identity.
To this end, the CA is commissioning a Project Fundraiser to plan, lead and oversee a fundraising and sponsorship programme. The Project Fundraiser will work alongside a small Project Delivery Team and a Project Steering Group in order to deliver the project.
The World Reimagined
The TWR initiative provides an opportunity to face the shared history about the Transatlantic Slave Trade with honesty and empathy and which recognises and celebrates the social, economic and cultural contribution of Britain’s black communities. Operating across 8 UK cities, TWR will see trails of globe sculptures installed across cities and city regions that will bring to life the impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
As part of this national initiative, Liverpool City Region will see the installation of at least 28 globe sculptures alongside some digital installations that will form a heritage trail that will speak to 9 themes dealing with the impact of Transatlantic Slavery and its enduring legacy and impact on contemporary racial inequality.
Liverpool’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade is well documented, but what is less well understood, is the impact of the trade on the wider City Region. Rather than just a few acres around the City’s docks, the Transatlantic Slave Trade had a huge impact on the wider City Region in shaping its industrial development. The World Reimagined will provide greater understanding of the social, economic and cultural legacy of the slave trade and its impact today.
Through an education and art programme, the project will be rooted in local schools and communities in order to facilitate dialogues around racial equality and justice and linked deeply to where people live. Local communities will develop an understanding of how the slave trade impacted their area as well as the rest of the City Region and will enable the co-option of new voices and communities to social activism in support of race equality.
TWR will also facilitate a unique opportunity to celebrate and showcase not only the region’s Black communities, but also that of our Chinese, Asian and other diverse ethnic communities. The region is home to some of the oldest established minority ethnic communities in Europe and the project will uncover their historical and more contemporary contributions and struggles, that will enable new stories to be uncovered and understood.
This unique combination of art, education, community and research programmes will enable greater understanding and facilitate challenges to racial inequality, whilst capitalising on the region’s tradition of radicalism in order to provide new methods of driving up the visitor economy.
