‘Giz A Job’ Community Heritage Project Seeking Volunteers

Are you passionate about the history of Liverpool? Do you want to gain experience in the heritage sector? If so, become a volunteer for the Giz a Job project!

Giz A Job Callout

The Vauxhall Community Law & Information Centre have been awarded a £70,000 grant to deliver Giz a Job, a community heritage project documenting the first People’s March for Jobs. The 30-day March to London was an evocative anti-unemployment protest that left Liverpool Pier Head on 1 May 1981 (see attached flyer).

They are looking for volunteers to assist in the collection of oral history interviews amongst key witnesses and other research material. Participants will be offered free skills workshops in the following:

  • Archival Research (provided by Liverpool Records Office)
  • Oral History Interviewing (provided by the Oral History Society)
  • Exhibition Design and Curation (provided by Museum of Liverpool)

All Giz a Job volunteers will be offered free trips to the Museum of Liverpool, the People’s History Museum (Manchester) and the Working Class Movement Library (Salford).

Once the material has been collected, there will be an opportunity for volunteers to help design a museum exhibition, which will be launched to the public in Liverpool Central Library in early 2024.

All costs (including travel and training) will be covered by project organisers and food & drink provided at each volunteer meeting or training session.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age, but aren’t required to possess any experience of volunteering or working in the heritage or arts sectors. As long as interested parties are eager to learn about Merseyside’s rich history, they are welcome!

If you or someone in your network are interested in volunteering, please speak to our Project Coordinator Greig Campbell on 07585 669 833 or email info@thepeoplesmarch.co.uk.
