Reader Leader – Woochurch High School, closes 30 Jul ’24

This role is responsible for creating a culture of reading for pleasure within Woodchurch High school that sits outside the national curriculum but helps to enhance it.

This role leads weekly one-to-one and group Shared Reading sessions with pupils identified by designated staff members. With responsibility for nurturing a culture of Reading for Pleasure within Woodchurch High School this role aims to promote health and well-being through:

– Introducing children to the idea of Shared Reading and reading for pleasure.
– Giving pupils the opportunity to explore, discuss and think about potentially difficult topics in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
– Improving the wellbeing and confidence of children
– Providing children with dedicated time and space to read or be read to.
– Improving life skills e.g. listening, collaborating, social connection

Hours: 1.5 days per week term time only (additional 4 days ad hoc across the year) (Annualised pattern TBC)
Salary: £21,445.42 per annum (pro-rata)
Contract: Term time – 2nd September 2024 to 22nd July 2025

Person Specification:

– Ability to demonstrate wide range of personal reading, including poetry, and the ability to talk about it in an engaging manner
– Read to Lead trained or a willingness to attend this training
– Able to demonstrate why literature is important to you
– Excellent at reading aloud
– Committed to The Reader’s beliefs and values
– A good communicator with great speaking, listening and writing skills
– Able to make and maintain appropriate relationships with schools and teachers
– Has the ability to quickly establish a rapport with young people; a warm and engaging delivery style
– Able to deal with potentially distressing situations in a careful and calm manner
– Self-motivated and able to work unsupervised
– Able to work in a peripatetic style
– Able to demonstrate excellent emotional resilience
– An understanding of the problems of engaging people who think books are not for them
– Experience working with children and young people
