Part-time (0.4 FTE contract)
£17,000 – £22,000 per annum, pro rata
The Reader is looking for somebody who has a deep connection with literature and experience working with children in the voluntary sector, to recruit and support a group of volunteers who will be working one to one with looked after children for a period of 6 months, as well supporting the children to then transition from reading one to one to attending local reading groups in community settings.
This project is funded by BBC Children in Need and is a new way for The Reader to continue to deliver a long standing commitment to reading with Looked After Children in the North West of England. Their aim is to raise standards in literacy through promoting reading for pleasure.
We know from UNESCO that ‘Reading for pleasure is the single most important thing that will make a child successful in life’ and that Looked After Children are at a significant disadvantage educationally and in social and emotional terms. This project seeks to ameliorate that disadvantage as much as possible and they hope to encourage young people to see reading as a fun and life enhancing activity.
The Reader’s innovative shared reading model is also important in building young people’s confidence and self esteem, and improving their mental and emotional well being as they develop a love of reading as a self soothing technique.
This role is suited to an energetic individual who can pass on knowledge, work flexibly in set structures, provide excellent support to a large number of volunteers, who wants to share best practice with other colleagues working with volunteers and can work under pressure.
