Artists – Letting in the Light, Artists Books Exhibition, closes 12 Jan ’25

The Society of Wood Engravers (SWE), Printmaking Today and Liverpool Book Art are curating an international exhibition of artists’ books at Kirkby Gallery in Knowsley, Liverpool City Region to coincide with the 87th SWE Annual Exhibition. The exhibition will run from May until August 2025.

The title of the Exhibition is ‘Letting in the Light’. Relief printmaking techniques, such as wood engraving, are subtractive: every mark is white, you are letting in the light. Wood engravers have to think like photographers: “Where is the light source, where is the light falling?” This theme has been chosen to make the connection to the SWE exhibition. There are many similarities between book art and wood engraving. In both fields, artists create multiples in small editions, or unique works. In both, fine art is created with great technical skill, and can be denigrated as ‘craft’. In both too, self-publishing is the norm.

The call to participate is open to all forms of printmaking and bookmaking. They will accept proposals for work as well as existing works that fit the theme.

They invite all printmakers to tackle the creation of an artist’s book for this exhibition, and have this work exhibited alongside established (and new!) book artists. They also encourage established book artists to explore forms of printmaking as part of their submission. They will also accept existing works that fit the theme.

They are excited to explore the possibilities of parallels, exchange, and cross-over between artists working in book art and printmaking. In both these fields there are traditions (structures in book art, subject matter in wood engraving) as well as individuals exploring new possibilities in their respective fields, whether in terms of production techniques and technologies, subject matter or other aspects.

An unexpected approach or fresh expression of an idea will be judged favourably alongside technical skill.

Fundraiser – Winter Wonderland theatre tour of 30 care homes / That Theatre Group, closes 24 Dec ’24

That Theatre Group’s vision is to bring joy and meaningful therapeutic engagement to older people living with dementia, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases, through a magical theatrical experience.

Audiences will hear the memories of winters past from over 100 care home residents and can expect a multi-sensory extravaganza of striking visuals, enchanting characters and sing-a-long Christmas classics.

Their team of creatives are currently based in a care home in Liverpool for 10 weeks whilst they create the show with regular activities being delivered with residents, their loved ones and staff.

Arts Council England is financially supporting the project, but they require match funding to enable them to tour the show and deliver regular activities in care homes. Every penny received will be invested in this unique, beautiful and important project.

The cost to care homes is only £50 per show.

Sadly, winter is not a joyous time for everyone, and in today’s world, everybody knows of someone living with dementia or older people living in care. You may be grappling with the difficulties or your own loved one’s care plan, or making the difficult decision of whether to place them in care or not. Your support will help them to bring magic and connection to those who desperately need it at this time of year.

Your generous donation will be used for costs to cover touring the show to 30 care homes across Merseyside in November and December, and will ensure they bring a smile to as many care home residents and their loved ones as possible this Christmas.

That Theatre Group’s Executive Producer is Peter Ward, founder of COoL (Creative Organisations of Liverpool), who led the collective for its first 7 years and was also Director of Hope Street Ltd.
