Artists – Flag it Up 3/dot-art, closes 12 Dec

dot-art and Bruntwood Works are delighted to announce the launch of the third open call for the Flag It Up project.

For this call, as we approach COP26 in Glasgow, they are tackling the theme of the climate crisis and are asking Liverpool City Region artists to design a flag to highlight this vital issue.

Flag It Up is a partnership between dot-art and Bruntwood Works to create an exciting new platform for public art in Liverpool – using flags! The selected artists receive a fee of £500 and a one year artist membership with dot-art.

The flagpole is mounted on the Grade II listed Exchange Court, 1 Dale Street, built in 1858 for the Liverpool and London Insurance Company and currently home to RBS. The large central flagpole, which is mounted above the main entrance and rises to the second floor, was unused for many years. This project aims to bring it back to life with a newly commissioned contemporary artwork flown as a flag, every 6 months.

In September 2020, they launched an open call for artists based in the Liverpool City Region to design the first flag, which was in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Sumuyya Khader was selected and her work, entitled “Black, We Exist” was displayed for 6 months. Their second call, in response to International Women’s Day addressed issues around gender equality. Artist Charlotte Southall was commissioned and her work “Reach” is currently flying on the Dale Street flagpole.

For their third open call, we are asking artists to address the most pressing issue of our time; the climate crisis. How can art help raise awareness of the problems we face? What can we do in our daily lives to help? What impacts are our actions having on our planet? What should world and national leaders be doing to reduce carbon emissions?

Instructions for Artists

  • To apply, please complete the submission form here: https://form.jotform.com/dotart/flag-it-up-3
  • You will NOT need to produce a full design, just samples of previous work and any ideas you have of how you would approach the commission.
  • The selected artist will need to produce a completely new and original piece of work.
  • The final artwork will need to be suitable for reproduction on a 10×6 foot / 305x182cm flag and have visual impact from ground level.
  • The original art work and copyright will remain the property of the artist.

The closing date for submissions is midnight Sunday 12th December.

Chair and Trustees – The Royal Standard, closes 12 Dec

The Royal Standard (TRS) is Liverpool’s leading artist-led charity providing opportunities and studio space for our region’s artistic talent.

They are looking to recruit a Chair and additional Trustees to help steer the organisation during an exciting period in its development. There are great opportunities for them to expand their reach and provide support for more of the artists they work with. They are looking for people to help us to maximize this potential so they can better deliver on their aims. Are you the person that can help lead this change?

Chair

TRS requires a leader with vision, determination and passion to help deliver their ambitions for the future. You will Chair a team of 8-10 trustees & work with a team of 6 voluntary Artist Leads who manage a day to day studio and programme of arts activity. As part of its commitment to developing artists careers, TRS also provides affordable studio space for 40 artist members who are regularly consulted and represented by the Artist Leads.

They are looking to create a permanent paid role to support their volunteers and the charity’s activity. They are also looking to secure long term sustainable premises that better support our activities and ambition. Their ideal candidate would have the skills and knowledge to help us achieve these milestones.

A passion for the arts or background as an arts professional would be advantageous as would an understanding of artist-led practice. However any experience in successfully taking charities through periods of investment and development would be welcome.

Treasurer

Key to their fiscal responsibility they require a treasurer to oversee our finances. The Treasurer will maintain a strategic focus on their financial resources and their management; working closely with the Chair, other Trustees and our auditors.

You will also lead a small finance committee to ensure all monies for multiple projects are accounted for and annual reports submitted. As a charity they have several different revenue streams some of which are restricted funds and grants.

Artists & Arts Professionals

As an artist-led organisation they feel it is vital to have artists’ voices represented that reflect the diversity of practice and experience of those artists they support. They want artists to join our board who value artist-led networks and can lend their experience and knowledge to further the reach and offer support to the activities they champion.

TRS welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and would love to hear from applicants who belong to groups underrepresented in the arts.

Key Commitments

  • The Board will meet on average 4 times per year and they would expect board members to attend a minimum of 2/3 meetings (in person ideally or virtually).
  • Support their activities by attending events and exhibitions where possible.
  • Act as an advocate for their organisation and its activities
  • Be able to commit to a minimum 2 year term on their board
  • All Trustee positions are voluntary and therefore unremunerated.

Freelance Visual Artists – Liverpool Learning Partnership, closes 26 Nov

Liverpool Learning Partnership and the Sister Gwen Appleton Trust are funding six secondary schools to take part in this programme which is engaging 135 young people from diverse backgrounds.

Throughout the academic year they are experiencing workshops with ethnically diverse artists, exploring how art expresses cultural heritage and identity. They are also visiting local galleries and artist studios, and learning about how art expresses thoughts, feelings, ideas and beliefs.

The next step is for them to express their collective voice by creating an art work with a professional artist, inspired by their hopes and dreams for the future. These will be exhibited at the International Slavery Museum in summer 2022.

They wish to recruit artists with lived experience of racism and discrimination, who because of their race or ethnicity are put at a systemic disadvantage. This particular protected characteristic is an occupational requirement to provide appropriate support when facilitating discussion about race, racism and discrimination.

Artists – The Owl and the Pussy Cat designs/Culture Knowsley, closes 6 Dec

Most people are very familiar with The Owl & the Pussy-Cat poem that tells the tale of two animals setting off to sea in a ‘beautiful pea green boat.’ But what many people do not know is that the poem, by Edward Lear, was actually written at Knowsley Hall.

This fascinating fact and Lear’s connections to Knowsley are set to be celebrated throughout 2022 with a sculpture trail featuring 16 pairs of 2 metre-high owls and pussy-cats.

Knowsley Council and Wild in Art are keen to work with local creatives on this project to bring to life Knowsley’s cultural identity through these magical sculptures.

They are seeking artists to create a design for either the owl or the pussy cat, or both and if selected, paint the design onto the sculptures during March 2022. The sculptures will be on the streets of Knowsley from 20th June 2022 until 4th September

Artists will be paid £850 for the commission. If artists would like to advise and support local community groups to create their designs there will be an additional fee of £150.

Closing date for submissions is Monday 6th December

All details regarding submissions can be found here.
