Liverpool to Host Global Goals Week for 5th Year in ’24

September 2024 sees the return of Global Goals Week: Liverpool following the spectacular success of last year’s campaign.

2023 saw Lord McConnell open proceedings, Cllr Liam Robertson confirm the city’s climate commitments, 18 events across the Liverpool City Region, well over 500 real-world participants, Al Pacino giving his half-time pep talk, and a global audience reach to be envied. The entire community of Liverpool certainly stepped up and showed the world exactly what it can do.

This year’s plans will bring together leaders, policymakers, business leaders, community organisations, students and youth groups from around the region and the world, to share best practices, showcase innovative solutions, demand bolder leadership and forge new partnerships to advance the SDGs everywhere.

From September 22nd to 27th 2030hub will host and support a wide variety of launches, interactive events, workshops, networking opportunities, and online content all designed to inspire and empower participants to take action to leave nobody behind and tackle climate change.

“We are thrilled, and maybe a little scared after the success of 2023, to host Global Goals Week: Liverpool 2024. Year five will be even bigger than ever!” said 2030hub’s David Connor. “This event is a unique opportunity for Liverpool City Region to come together, accelerate sustainability and highlight what Liverpool can do for the world!” he adds.

Global Goals Week is a universal call to action beyond any 2030hub events, as a platform for all local stakeholders to convene around key themes and support each other’s events, activities and content. By working together Liverpool can lead the way, as already demonstrated with last year’s GGWL2023 event and success in winning ‘Most Improved Sustainable Destination’ awarded by the Global Destination Sustainability Index.

Our call to action to all Liverpool City Region stakeholders includes:

Take Action – Host your own sustainability / networking / educational event. Launch something new. Commit to be bolder!

Advocate – Use this week to campaign for the change you want to see! Who can you influence or support? Share your successes!

Collaborate – Actively support all local Global Goals activities.

2030hub’s targets for this year include:

  • 10+ Liverpool events on the main UN Global Goals Week calendar
  • +3 global cities connecting with Liverpool through our Local2030 Coalition network
  • 5+ new local SDG initiatives launched / commitments made
  • To get #GlobalGoalsLiverpool trending!

“Global Goals crucially demand local actions. The UN is helping the SDGs refocus away from countries and Prime Ministers, to what we can ALL do at a city and town level, every day. Hopefully Global Goals Week: Liverpool can become more of a Eurovision scale success for sustainability, playing to the local creative, entrepreneurial and passionate strengths here.” says 2030hub Co-Founder Stephen Sykes.

As always, 2030hub will support all local stakeholders to engage through regular online workshops (register your place here).

We have already begun updating the online support materials such as logos, videos, links and documents on the GGWL2024 Trello available to all here.

2030hub is seeking partners and sponsors to support administration, core events and wider stakeholder events for 2024. If you would like to explore the benefits of either in-kind or financial support for Global Goals Week Liverpool contact David Connor via david.connor@the2030hub.com

Open Eye Gallery online zine-making and photography activity pack

Do you take pictures of your garden?

Throughout 2023, photographer Gwen Riley Jones was working with three community gardening groups (Q Gardens, Strand Community Hub and Petrus Incredible Edibles Rochdale) to co-create a series of photographs which told their gardening and growing story.

Meanwhile in Glasgow, photographers Saskia Coulson and Colin Tennant were collaborating on a photography project with the Cranhill Community Development Trust to document the story of the gardening and cooking initiatives on their site.

They produced zines and tips for zine-making, photography activity pack and videos. You can find them at openeye.org.uk/whatson/oeg-and-rhs/.

They hope it can inspire you to document your own gardening stories!

Both projects were showcased as part of their LOOK Climate Lab 2024, and both are part of their national initiative, the Socially Engaged Photography Network.

Shakespeare North welcomes Swiss dancer mentored by acclaimed anarchic British artist

A Swiss artist whose career in dance has brought her to Liverpool will bring a powerful one woman show to Prescot this summer, following a mentorship from an award-winning British performer.

In Bloom by Aline Costa, which runs from 18th to 20th July at Shakespeare North, promises to be a “mesmerising dance performance with powerful imagery and unexpected twists taking you on an unforgettable journey into the unknown.”

Costa, a performer and choreographer born in Switzerland, trained in Mexico at Univerdanza Dance Company, and has been based in Huyton and Liverpool since 2016. Her latest show brings a unique vision to the stage, captivating audiences with her artistry, skill and elegant eccentricity.

Whilst putting together this new show, Aline has been mentored by the acclaimed artist, dance performer, choreographer and dance film-maker, Liz Aggiss.

For the past 40 years Aggiss has been re(de)fining her signature style and brand of British contemporary dance; from her early days in the 80’s supporting punk legends The Stranglers to winning a Total Theatre Award in 2017 for her show Slap and Tickle. She was given a Bonnie Bird Choreography Award in 1994, an Arts Council Dance Fellowship in 2003, and has been commissioned by the likes of The Zap, Gardner Arts Brighton, University of Surrey and South Bank.

Speaking during rehearsals for the show, Costa said: Liz Aggiss has been instrumental in the development of “In Bloom.” She has been present during my studio time, guiding, mentoring, advising, and suggesting new elements for the piece. Liz never imposes her view but always kindly offers her vast experience and background, not only in dance but also regarding the philosophy of being an artist in this world.”

Aline continued: “For me, it was an enormous opportunity to work with someone like Liz Aggiss. I knew she would challenge me, question my decisions for the piece, and push me to explore new ways to communicate on stage. She took me out of my comfort zone, which is so important as an artist. We learn so much in those moments. I believe the piece is now much stronger and has a clearer meaning.”

Aline herself holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Stage Dance from the Institute of Fine Arts at Colima University, Mexico, where she worked as a dancer and creator for Univerdanza Dance Company.

Since moving to Liverpool, her career has seen her produce, choreograph and perform across the North West, as well as working on a variety of short films.

Most recently, she was offered a Physical Fest Female Bursary to create a new solo piece and presented it at the festival last summer at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool to great acclaim.

Drawing inspiration from a variety of dance and physical theatre techniques and styles, “In Bloom” features evocative imagery, compelling narratives and dark humour, guiding the audience through a world of unreality, filled with thought-provoking moments and unpredictable twists and turns, ultimately delivering an experience that is actively engaging and imaginatively bizarre.

In Bloom also features original music by celebrated Liverpool avant-garde quartet, Ex-Easter Island Head.

In Bloom will be performed at Shakespeare North in Prescot from 18th July to 20th July 2024. Tickets start at just £5 and are available from the venue’s website.

dot-art celebrates young artists with awards ceremony and exhibition

The creative talents of young artists from across Merseyside were celebrated at a special awards ceremony organized by dot-art, which took place in the opulent Concert Room at St George’s Hall. The award ceremony recognised the outstanding achievements of the winners in the dot-art Schools art competition, a program supported by their key partner, Edge Hill University.

The competition attracted a wide range of participants, encompassing year 5 students from primary schools and year 9 pupils from secondary schools, representing more than 90 schools across the Liverpool City Region and its surrounding areas.

Following the awards ceremony, the winning artworks from these gifted young artists have been curated into an exhibition at Liverpool’s prestigious Walker Art Gallery. This showcase serves as a testament to the participants’ artistic prowess, creativity, and dedication, providing a platform for their work to be appreciated by a broader audience.

The exhibition at Walker Art Gallery runs from 6 June to 7 July 2024, and entry is free.

He was joined by celebrated sculptor Faith Bebbington, Alice Demba, Young People and Adults Lead at National Museums Liverpool, Louise Hesketh, Programmes Manager for Networks & Partnerships at Curious Minds, and Professor Matthew Pateman, who leads the Department of English & Creative Arts at Edge Hill University.

The shortlisted entries from all the schools then went to an online public vote.

Carolyn Murray, dot-art Schools project manager, said: “Over the years, we’ve witnessed the incredible growth and impact of this competition, and the joy it brings to everyone involved – from the young artists themselves to their proud parents, guardians, and educators.

The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by these talented individuals serve as a testament to the importance of nurturing creativity and self-expression from a young age. We are honoured to play a role in fostering their artistic journeys and providing a platform for their voices to be heard and celebrated.”

Lucy Johnson, Head of Art Gallery Exhibitions at National Museums Liverpool, said:

“We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible talent, creativity, and dedication of these young artists at Walker Art Gallery. The diverse range of artworks on display showcases their boundless imagination and their ability to convey deep emotions through their artworks.

By providing a platform for these emerging artists to share their unique perspectives with the world, we hope to inspire them to continue pursuing their artistic passions and to believe in the power of their creative voice. Supporting and nurturing these young talents is not only an investment in their future but also in the future of the art world as a whole.”

Event

Dr Helen O’Keeffe, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Education, said:

“Through our amazing partnership with dot-art, we’ve been able to champion the importance of arts education, creativity, and children’s mental well-being in schools across the region. These are all fundamental aspects of our curriculum at the University. I urge everyone to visit the exhibition and witness firsthand the young artists’ incredible talent and creativity.”

Established back in 2012, dot-art Schools’ impact has grown each year, with over 700 schools participating to date, and almost 12,000 young artists having entered their artwork.

Heritage Open Days free events / experiences Sept ’24

Heritage Open Days (HODs) returns this September with thousands of free events and experiences. Brought to you by the National Trust, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and run by thousands of local organisations and volunteers, HODs brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history.

From historic houses to factories, museums to music halls, formal gardens to graveyards, places and spaces will again open for free this autumn. Across the country, thousands of intriguing events and fun new experiences will happen as part of Heritage Open Days, the country’s largest festival of history and culture, which they have been since 1994 – the same year the world’s first smartphone came to market, the Channel Tunnel opened, and Sunday trading was legalised in England.

Over the three decades since Heritage Open Days began it has grown in scope and scale. What began as a weekend dedicated to revealing buildings not normally open to the general public has exploded into a ten-day festival, celebrating a myriad of different aspects of heritage and culture. With more than 100,000 events and over 39 million visits across 30 years, it has grown from just 700 events in the first year to over 5,250 in 2023. Still committed to its founding principles of free access and being community led, it’s a much-loved event that many look forward to every year.

Hundreds of activities will adopt this year’s theme, Routes – Networks – Connections, bringing together the past and present in a festival that includes workshops, talks, hidden spaces, walks and activities for all the family.

Liam Montgomery, Heritage Open Days Marketing & Projects Manager says: “The scale and diversity of Heritage Open Days is just incredible – every year thousands of passionate people help visitors to make doorstep discoveries and connect with history and heritage in every part of England. This year though, it will be extra special as we celebrate three decades worth of stories and all the brilliant people and places that have made it, and continue to make it, all possible!”

The festival will again feature thousands of events and activities across the country including:

  • Explore the history of Joseph Whitwell through the paths and waterways at Hollybush Conservation Centre with a self-guided tour celebrating his legacy in Yorkshire as the world’s largest forced rhubarb producer.
  • In Gosport, you can try your hand at shipwreck archaeology on the beach! Under guidance from the Nautical Archaeology Society learn how to record a real shipwreck, then use that information to discover the history of the vessel when it was still afloat.
  • Join the team at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre as they celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Centre! Discover the history of this remarkable site and why they tell the story of two of Britain’s most famous Kings.
  • Go behind the scenes of helicopter emergency medical services at the East Anglian Air Ambulance base and discover how every second counts with this life-saving charity’s work. Learn how to save a life with CPR taster sessions and see the service in action with the hangar, crew’s rest facilities and the interactive simulation suite to explore.
  • Discover a castle that’s not a castle, on an island that’s not an island. Venture across the causeway to Holy Island and discover the magic of Lindisfarne Castle with a garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll blooming with summer flowers, 19th-century industrial lime kilns, and shoreline walks.

Founded in 1994, Heritage Open Days has been capturing imaginations for 30 years. Last year, more than 45,000 organisers and volunteers ran over 5,000 events across the country, attracting one million visits. Around one-third of visitors had not visited a heritage site/event in the past year while 80% of festival-goers said their visit made them more proud of their local area.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “I’m delighted we’re able to support Heritage Open Days for another year, giving people across the country the chance to explore, celebrate, and enjoy England’s national heritage. With hundreds of activities on offer there’s something to suit everyone. And best of all – thanks to money raised by Postcode Lottery players – they can all be enjoyed for free!”

Some organisations have been involved from the start, such as The Regency Town House in Brighton, Heritage Trust Lincolnshire and Gosport Heritage Open Days.

Terry Rhodes, Chair of Gosport Heritage Open Days says: “Gosport is proud to have been a pioneer of this heritage festival, and 30 years on we still provide a really popular and varied program for Heritage Open Days in our small town with a big history.  We are thrilled with this year’s theme and have many interesting walks, talks, and displays depicting unique local links to historic transport routes, important military networks, and fascinating maritime connections, plus lots more.  As always, we try to make our events as accessible as possible for all to enjoy and look forward to welcoming people from near and far for HODs.”

Heritage Open Days is brought to you by the National Trust with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Every single Heritage Open Days event is free, including access to many sites that usually charge for admission.

Liverpool encouraged to take part in ‘acts of kindness’ to celebrate Mandela Day this July

A local charity has joined forces with Liverpool BID Company to encourage organisations and individuals to take part in ‘acts of kindness’ to commemorate the life and work of Nelson Mandela this July.

Mandela8, who have just overseen the completion of a new memorial to the revered leader in Princes Park, will once again mark Mandela Day on 18th July with a series of events and activities in the city. The theme this year is ‘Celebrating Communities’.

The day remembers Mandela’s achievements in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation.

Sonia Bassey, Chair of Mandela8, said: “Nelson Mandela inspired the idea for Mandela Day at his 90th birthday celebrations in Hyde Park, London when he said ‘It is time for new hands to lift the baton. It is in your hands now’. The idea of Mandela Day is that everyone has the ability to make an impact and do something in their own way to change the world and the world of those around them.”

The city has its own special relationship and connection with Nelson Mandela. When Liverpool became aware of Apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s incarceration, community activists, unions and the city as a whole came together to support the Free Nelson Mandela Campaign and took a solid stance against Apartheid.

Nelson Mandela was gifted the Freedom of the City in 1994 and a Civic Reception held in his honour 20 years later in 2014.

Sonia continued: “Liverpool is built on strong political and social values and has experienced oppression but not on the scale of South Africa. So, when awareness of the brutality of Apartheid in South Africa became known in Liverpool the City united to support Mandela, the ANC and South African people. We now have the permanent legacy to Nelson Mandela, the Memorial installed in Princes Park, Liverpool 8, endorsed by Dr Maki Mandela and Tukwini Mandela, his eldest daughter and granddaughter, with whom Liverpool now has a special relationship.”

As part of the Acts of Kindness week this year Mandela8 and Liverpool BID Company are asking corporate organisations to take part in Mandela Day, as part of Mandela Week, to do an act of kindness to commemorate Nelson Mandela, acknowledging his values and dedication to the service of humanity and struggle for international democracy and peace throughout the world.

Those taking part are encouraged to promote and celebrate their work in advance and on the day through social media by linking it to the international social media campaign for Mandela Day using the following hashtag: #AoKcelebratingcommunities and tagging us @mandela800 @mandela8_liverpool @LpoolBIDcompany

The Corporate Giving Programme Ask

Mandela8 are looking for 1 company a month to sign up to supporting a voluntary or community group with their skills, experience or time to support an area of need identified.  The types of activities you can support can be found in their Acts of Kindness brochure here.

How this will work:

  1. Nominate your organisation outlining you offer, and the month you are wishing to do this by emailing mandela8@outlook.com.
  2. Once all organisations are signed up over the 10 month period the programme will be promoted across the community voluntary sector indicating the types of support on offer, asking groups to sign up to the programme to get support
  3. Your organisation will be matched to a group in need of support to enable you to fulfil your act of kindness.
  4. You can then discuss the detail, undertake internal risk assessments and arrange for your act of kindness to take place during the month you offered.
  5. Promote your activity using the hashtags.
