Listening to children read – Schoolreaders (Liverpool)

To go into a primary school every week and hear a group of children read on a one to one basis. We do not ask for any particular qualifications, but Schoolreaders need to enjoy spending time with children, have a good grasp of written and spoken English and be able to commit to attend school weekly during term time for a minimum of 1 year.

Schoolreaders is a free service for primary schools and all our volunteers give their time freely. We regret we cannot reimburse expenses so try to match volunteers with schools as local as possible. Each potential volunteer completes an application form online or by post and agrees to the Schoolreaders code of conduct. The partner school who the volunteer is paired with completes an enhanced DBS check at the school’s expense.

The school provide guidance and training specific to their school and your activities. Each school uses our volunteers differently, so some volunteers see the same few children each week, while others get to spend time with every member of the class over a term.

Venue Organiser – Read Easy, Liverpool

This role presents a wonderful opportunity to get out and about in your community, liaising with local businesses and organisations to find and arrange suitable reading venues for your group.

Generally, our preferred venues are libraries or similar settings, but they are always locations where at least one other person is in the building to ensure the safety and integrity of the reading sessions. Similarly, the venues must provide an element of confidentiality, so that Readers aren’t intimidated by having to return to classroom-like settings.

You will be organised, proactive and enthusiastic and enjoy spreading the word about your local group to a wide range of people and organisations.

Volunteer tutor (English or maths) – Action Tutoring, Bootle

Action Tutoring unlocks the potential of children and young people who are facing disadvantage. We are tackling the attainment gap head-on by forging partnerships with schools nationwide. Our trained volunteer tutors are empowered to enable pupils to make meaningful academic progress, opening doors to future opportunities.

The opportunity

Education in this country isn’t fair. If you are from a poorer socio-economic background, you are less likely to achieve academically than your peers.

As an English or maths tutor, you will choose one of our partner schools and work with 1-3 pupils for an hour a week, across the course 10-20 weeks. Sessions are either delivered on the school premises or online, at the same time each week. You can choose to support children preparing for their SATs (ages 9-11) or GCSEs (ages 14-16). We provide all of our tutors with training, workbooks to use in sessions, a DBS check and travel expenses up to £5 per session.

Face-to-face opportunities are available in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Southport, Wirral, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, London and Sussex. Links to our school locations can be found here at the bottom.

You can tutor online from anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales. Please note we cannot currently accept tutors who live outside the UK or are under the age of 18. Learn more about our virtual programmes here – https://actiontutoring.org.uk/reacharea/virtual-programmes/

Volunteering for just one hour per week is a rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged young people. You will be directly supporting them to build their confidence and help ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future, all while developing your own experience!
