Kaviraj Singh and Kousic Sen

Take a perfect break from your busy day and relax to the soothing sounds of the one hundred stringed Indian Santoor along with the tabla, performed by Kaviraj Singh and Kousic Sen.

Combining both soulful musicality and a complex rhythm, Singh brings a fresh blend of modern British culture and classical Indian tradition to his music. Raised in a musical family, he continues to take the legacy further by showcasing the beauty and intricacy of the Santoor; one of India’s most treasured stringed instruments.

Kousic Sen, Milap’s artist-in-residence is a tabla player well known for his rhythmic mastery. Born into a musical family, Kousic is the proud representative of the Banaras Gharana and is one of the foremost tabla players of his generation.

This concert is part of Milap’s Indika Festival, taking place across the Liverpool City Region from 17–31 October 2025. It also forms a highlight of Milap’s 40th Anniversary celebrations.

The Stringmasters

 

Anil Srinivasan, an award winning Indian pianist, and Dr Jayanthi Kumaresh, a virtuoso of the Saraswathi Veena, have forged a remarkable musical partnership through their innovative collaboration, notably showcased in their project The Stringmasters.

They were first brought together by Milap in 2013 for a concert at London’s Southbank Centre, where they discovered a natural synergy between the piano and veena, both string instruments. Their remarkable ability in blending Western and Carnatic classical traditions to create a unique ‘third space’ of musical expression has been winning fans worldwide.

This partnership, marked by performances at venues as diverse as the Riverside Theatre in Sydney, the Habitat in Delhi, Bengaluru’s Jagriti Theatre and Chennai’s The ARTery, emphasises intuitive and genre-neutral explorations of ragas.They are often accompanied by percussionists of great repute such as Giridhar Udupa. Their work, celebrated for breaking artistic barriers, integrates classical depth with contemporary accessibility, engaging diverse audiences globally while redefining the boundaries of Indian and Western musical dialogues.

 

Rachael Jean Harris

Rachael Jean Harris is a songwriter living in New Brighton. Her music has been described by BBC6 Music as “wildly original”.

An adventurous fusion of folk, progressive and jazz sounds meet stories that take the listener from a prison cell in Nevada to a cormorant’s nest on the shores of the Mersey.

Rachael’s new album Tethered to Nothing is due for release in Autumn 2025.

Seth Lakeman

Seth was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for Kitty Jay. Multiple albums, tours and high-profile collaborations later, the acclaimed folk artist released his latest studio album The Granite Way in February on his own label, Honour Oak Records. It’s a collection of songs recorded alongside a group of longtime collaborators of Seth’s, staying true to his roots and referring to ancient stories that inspired early West Country storytelling.

Seth Lakeman: “Each song feels strongly connected through history to the moors and the sea. I had written the stories and songs beforehand and had the melodic tunes ready for us all to explore when we recorded in the room, and the musical interplay between this lineup really displays their appetite for sounds and subjects within the folk tradition.”

In recent years Seth was asked to record on Van Morrison’s album Moving On Skiffle and he collaborated with Public Service Broadcasting. Seth has also previously worked, and toured extensively, with Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) with his band the Sensational Space Shifters.

The Hope Street Ensemble

The Hope Street Ensemble is a brand new string quartet of players from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. As a new collaboration, this will naturally be their Tung Auditorium debut!

This programme catches Webern in late-Romantic mood, followed by the final quartet Mendelssohn ever composed.

Akram Abdulfattah

Akram Abdulfattah is a Palestinian-American violinist who combines jazz with middle eastern and Indian music.

Akram’s music is influenced by Hindu, Turkish, and Persian styles, reflecting the rich legacy and culture of oriental sounds in a modernized fashion.

In 2023, his multinational group visited the UK for the first time, performing a debut London show, and appearing at Knockengorroch and Cambridge Folk festivals. Akram’s talent has received international recognition as he’s won prestigious awards and engaged in various international and cross-culture projects.

Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company and DaDa Ensemble

Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company and DaDa Ensemble are excited to present the premiere of a brand new work, written by the talented young musicians of the Young DaDa Ensemble and Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company, in collaboration with Liverpool Philharmonic musicians.

Over the course of ten workshops, Liverpool Philharmonic musicians Georgina Aasgaard and Jon Hering and DaDa freelance musicians David Kelly and George Jenkins have mentored five Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company musicians, five DaDa Ensemble members and one trainee lead musician to help create an exciting and innovative new composition.

Living Fires of Passion: Songs of Ecstasy and Song of Songs

Beautiful Renaissance Choral Music sung by Liverpool Renaissance Singers and directed by Liam Owens. Song of Songs one of the most enigmatic and sensual books of the Bible burns with the language of love – earthly, spiritual and eternal. Its poetry long embraced by composers speaks of longing and union, of beauty glimpsed and pursued, of passion that transcends the merely human. OUr programme explores this fercent landscape through the sacred choral settings of Renaissance Masters including Victoria, Guerrero and Palestrina.
