The Sandy Denny Project

With every year the late Sandy Denny’s (Fairport Convention) reputation continues to grow in stature as a songwriter and interpreter of traditional material, and these six musicians that also share an impressive folk-rock pedigree, and each at the very top of their musical game, interpret Sandy’s wonderful body of work.

BBC Radio Northampton, as part of National Music Day 2017, chose ex-Fotheringay members Sally Barker (The Poozies and BBC’s The Voice) and guitarist PJ Wright (TradArrr, The Dylan Project and LJE) to celebrate the award of Sandy Denny’s Blue Plaque at Byfield Village Hall, the scene of her last-ever concert in 1978. The following year, Sally and PJ constructed a dream folk-rock band for a sell-out concert at the Byfield Village Hall to commemorate the passing of Sandy, 40 years before.

With the line up of Sally, PJ, frequent Fairport Convention guest Anna Ryder, rising star Marion Fleetwood and the rhythm section of bassist Mat Davies and drummer Mark Stevens (from now-defunct folk-rock legends Little Johnny England), the show is approached as a tribute in its best sense.

Tori Amos

Following the release of her critically-acclaimed album, Ocean to Ocean, and a sell-out world tour throughout 2022, celebrated singer-songwriter Tori Amos returns to the UK in 2023.

Tori will be performing with long-time collaborator bassist Jon Evans and renowned UK drummer Ash Soan, with special guest support to be announced.

Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album Little Earthquakes, and her number one album Under The Pink, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry’s most enduring and ingenious artists. Tori has transcended from commercial pop success to using her music to tackle serious issues around female gender, subsequently paving the way for a generation of young female activist popstars.

From her visceral depiction of sexual assault in Me and a Gun and her post-9/11 album Scarlet’s Walk, to her decidedly feminist stage musical The Light Princess, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political. Her stunning album Ocean To Ocean addressed the feelings of lock down, isolation, family and grief, with a gentle euphoric approach to such potentially dark musings.

Levellers

Five years after they set out on their hugely acclaimed 2018 acoustic tour, and released its companion album We The Collective, The Levellers return to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

They embark upon a brand new acoustic tour in 2023, which will be accompanied by a new album of acoustic reworkings of some of their finest compositions.

Grupo Luma

Grupo Luma returns to the Music Room with their special blend of contemporary Latin American roots music.

Led by Chilean brothers Francisco & Oscar Carrasco, the group takes you on an exciting journey of the continent’s vibrant and diverse musical heritage, bringing together a variety of traditional and contemporary instruments with melodies and rhythms that tell their own stories.

The group play an array of instruments and genres including Cumbia, Chacarera, Joropo, Son and Carnavalito, performing original songs as well as classics from some of Latin America’s musical legends such as Victor Jara, Mercedes Sosa, Ruben Blades, and Juan Luis Guerra.

Police Dog Hogan

Police Dog Hogan has been attracting incredible reviews for more than ten years now.

Singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist James Studholme is at the helm, supported by fiddle, banjo, accordion, trumpet, bass and drums. The band creates a mosaic of sounds and songs, including husky ballads mourning lost loves, foot-stompers about the West Country and full-throated, multi-harmony anthems.

The band’s eagerly-awaited new album Overground has been described as ‘their best ever’ and they’ll play tracks from it, as well as some of their most-loved songs, on their upcoming UK tour.

Police Dog Hogan have performed across the county, at Glastonbury, at the Americana Festival in Nashville, played support for Brian Wilson, and even crammed themselves into the legendary and tiny Somerset Shed for an acoustic set.

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra plays your favourite Eurovision hits

Hello, this is Liverpool calling… Eurovision is coming to our city and we can’t wait to join the party with a celebration of the world’s biggest, brightest and most bonkers musical event. There’s nothing like a Eurovision extravaganza – every single year it brings flamboyant costumes and staging, voting dramas and everyone’s favourite commentary, but most importantly, an absolute masterclass in cheesy hits and you-just-couldn’t-make-it-up musical antics.

From folk to power ballads, heavy metal to Europop, Eurovision has it all, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are ready to embrace the musical madness, bringing you orchestral versions of iconic Eurovision songs.

Hosted by the wonderful broadcaster Owain Wyn Evans (host of Radio 2’s Early Breakfast show in 2023, who raised more than £3 million for BBC Children in Need with a 24-hour drumathon!) and joined by incredible vocalists, the Orchestra will take you on a trip around the continent, performing ‘Waterloo’, ‘Boom Bang a Bang’, ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’, ‘Stefania’ and many more – and they’ll even throw in a glass of bubbly with every seat to kick off the night. Tickets for this one will go fast, so don’t take too long ‘Making Your Mind Up’!

All tickets include a glass of fizz delivered to your seat.

Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tubular Bells, the iconic masterpiece will be performed live with a full band, arranged and conducted by Oldfield’s long-term collaborator Robin Smith.

Tubular Bells was the debut studio album by English multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter Mike Oldfield, conceived in 1971 and finally released in 1973. Oldfield, who was just 17 years old when he started composing the music, played and recorded almost all of the instruments on the album.

It gained worldwide acclaim when the opening theme was used for the soundtrack of the horror film The Exorcist and went on to become the highest selling instrumental album of all time.

A bold and progressive fusion, Tubular Bells is a journey through classical, jazz, folk, prog rock and electronica.
