Ryan Young

2022 MG ALBA Musician of The Year nominee Ryan Young brings new and exciting ideas to traditional Scottish music, receiving international praise for his spell-binding interpretations on the fiddle.

His debut album was recorded with four time Grammy winner Jesse Lewis (who has worked with the likes of Bela Fleck and Yo Yo Ma) and launched at Feakle Traditional Music Festival in County Clare, accompanied by renowned guitarist, Dennis Cahill (Martin Hayes; The Gloaming).

Focussing on traditional Scottish music, Ryan brings new life to very old, often forgotten tunes by playing them in his own unique way. His fiddle playing is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision. His sound is very distinctive and takes the listener on an emotional and adventurous journey in any performance.

So you think you know British music? Everyone loves Jupiter from Holst’s The Planets, but you’ll hear so much more as Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze takes the Orchestra on a voyage to infinity and beyond.

They’ll join William Walton in a Spitfire over wartime London – and travel to 1939 New York, where the young British firebrand Arthur Bliss brings the house down with a volcano of a piano concerto played by Mark Bebbington.

Music for Meditation

Music for Meditation is an experimental approach to live music, a hybrid of live performance and guided meditation. The aim is to create a more immersive gig experience, using music as the object of meditation – with the help of a qualified secular mindfulness instructor.

For our second outing we are very happy to be welcoming Field Lines Cartographer to perform for us, who ‘paints music with a modular synthesizer, drawing influence from ambient, new age, and experimental electronics’.

The meditation will be guided by qualified instructor, Tony Bennett, a mindfulness teacher with The Mind Map and a current PhD student at LJMU’s School of Psychology.

The performance + guided meditation will last approximately 30 minutes, with a brief period before and after for introductions, explainers and feedback.

Attendees are encouraged to bring cushions or mats to make themselves as comfortable as possible. The event is taking place in a dance studio so the flooring is fine for sitting on, there will be a limited number of chairs available too.

Event

Spaces are strictly limited to 30 – so they’d recommend booking your ticket at the earliest available opportunity.
