Visions of Albion

There is something bold, new, channelled and true in the air around Visions of Albion. The roots duo exist in that magical space where melody meets soul and their songs of innocence and experience come to life with the places in between. Debut single You’re Not Alone had the Liverpool folk, country and Americana scene swooning over Daniel Ryan’s delicate but driven guitars and Samantha Shields cut-glass top line tales.

‘Shields stunning vocals and Ryan’s vocals and guitar are very good, but together they become greater than the sum of their parts…’ – Liverpool Acoustic

This delicate lament made Liverpool label and music publisher Klee Music sit up and take notice. And now, Visions of Albion’s much-anticipated debut EP is here. Five brand new recordings highlighting the duo’s pastoral and pop instincts, showcasing these Laurel Canyon-inspired songwriters. This eponymous EP traces the arc of such influences as Emmylou Harris, Vashti Bunyan and Fleetwood Mac, with each tune standing sentinel over the duo’s songwriting skills.

Kinaara

On 9 November, LEAF on Bold Street will play host to Leeds trio Kinaara. The perfect backdrop to a dark, candlelit night with friends and family, LEAF’s bohemian atmosphere sets the scene for the band’s unique ‘Punjabi meets Western’ musical style.

Kinaara are a trio of vocal, electric guitar, and drum kit. They play a mix of Celtic and Punjabi folk songs, presented in Kinaara’s own distinctive arrangements.

Brought together by singer Satnam Gaussian in 2018, the trio aim to achieve an identity that reflects both her Punjabi heritage and their UK upbringing as a whole.

Galsian began working on arrangements of the songs of Surinder Kaur and Poor Jehan, with guitar player John Hogg. Though both musicians are schooled in Indian classical music, they soon realised that they wanted to keep an edge to the sound with an emphasis on electric guitar and drums. Jazz drummer Simon Henry completes the cross-genre trio.

Nominated for ‘Best Indie Act’ 2021 by Radio Wigwam, Kinaara have been playing to enthusiastic audiences in the North of England with a standout performance at Musicport festival 2021.

Reviews of Kinaara:

‘you can hear Punjabi sounds– but there’s also folk, rock and jazz. Sometimes all at once’. Local Sound Focus

‘Kinaara are not simply an East meets West outing, Kinaara are discovering bonds at the heart of two cultures and they invite us to celebrate this through their music.’ John Boocock, BOOCOCKNET

Only Child Tenth Anniversary Celebrati...

Mellowtone are bringing Only Child’s Tenth Anniversary Celebration to LEAF on Bold Street, with special guests The Folk Doctors and Dorothy Bird.

Mellowtone presents Alan O’Hare’s eclectic folk ensemble Only Child as they celebrate their tenth anniversary with a special gig featuring a string quartet and the launch of their first ever vinyl album Looking Forward To Looking Back.

Featuring ten songs remastered for 2022 by Pete Maher (U2), including Scouse, Accidental Englishman, William Ralph Dean, and North John Street, the limited edition LP is the first release on the newly-launched Crosstown Records – from acclaimed Liverpool producer, engineer and guitarist Jon Lawton – and will be available from 1 October 2022.

Bruce is the record’s first single and has been described by Americana UK as “a great example of O’Hare’s fine songcraft and sense of infectious melody”. The song asks who do you turn to when grief threatens to overwhelm and is a paean to the things that get us through. “The thing with black feathers? I refuse to let it win,” says O’Hare.

Flipper (Feat Mike Watt)

We are extremely excited to announce, punk rock legends Flipper will headline IWF Substation on Friday the 5th August 2022, featuring original members Stephen De Pace (drums) and Ted Falconi (guitar), plus Mike Watt of Minutemen on bass & vocals.

Heavily influenced by The Birthday Party, The Velvet Underground, Chrome, PIL, Joy Division and The Stooges, FLIPPER have, throughout their 40+ year spanning career, inspired a large number of bands including The Melvins, Terminal Cheesecake, REM, Mudhoney, Unsane, Jane´s Addiction, Unwound & Nirvana (Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic played bass in the band throughout the 2000s), with their unique slowed-down, bass-driven, heavily distorted and repetitive style of punk.

In Henry Rollins’ memoir of the early 1980s punk rock scene, ‘Get In The Van’, he describes the Flipper experience this way:

‘They were just heavy. Heavier than you. Heavier than anything!”

This tour marks the band’s 43 year anniversary and for the special occasion, they are bringing San Diego’s sludge metal veterans 16 (Relapse Records) as main support on all dates!

Support also comes from local psych / noise power trio Harks and brand new kraut / alt rockers Nudist.

Vintage Crop

This July Future Yard are thrilled to be hosting Aussie Punks Vintage Crop, bringing through their doors a sound that incorporates jerky post-punk elements into their muddy garage rock, to galvanizing effect.

Forming in 2012, just below Melbourne, in the bay city of Geelong; Vintage Crop are next in the long line of exciting rock bands to come from Australia. Their style of slicing guitar music has pushed the band to the fore of the Melbourne circuit, and established them as one of the talents surging to the surface of Australia’s impressive music scene.

The band released their first album (TV Organs) in 2017 & haven’t relented since, releasing a total of 4 albums in 6 years moving from muddy, garage rock to post-punk. Their latest work “Kibitzer” showcases their signature tight guitar licks and robust rhythm section.

Teaming up again with iconic record labels Anti- Fade (AUS) & Upset The Rhythm (UK), “Kibitzer” is the band sounding truer to form than ever. They steer their sound any which way they feel like it – and they’ll be bringing it to Future Yard this summer.

The Mono LPs

Dynamic Liverpool outfit The Mono LPs follow up their support performance at Future Yard in April with a full, no-punches-pulled headline show on Friday 1st July. The quartet’s rootsy rock’n’roll is amplified by Vicky Reid’s cello, which allows frontman/guitarist Ste Reid, bassist Chris Barlow and drummer Tom McCabe to swirl around with aplomb.

The Mono LPs released their latest album Shuffle/Play via Fretsore Records in 2021, but were unable to gig it live due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
