Eurovision Song Contest Liverpool

Liverpool will host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine.

The Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will take place in the Liverpool Arena next to the River Mersey on Saturday 13 May with Semi-Finals on Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 May.

The BBC, together with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), will organise the Contest in consultation with UA:PBC, Ukraine’s public broadcaster and last year’s winners of the Contest.

Liverpool was chosen following a strong city bid process that examined facilities at the venue; the ability to accommodate thousands of visiting delegations, crew, fans and journalists; infrastructure; and the cultural offer of the Host City in reflecting Ukraine’s win in 2022.

Pet Shop Boys

Pet Shop Boys have announced new 2023 dates for their critically acclaimed and sold-out tour, ‘Dreamworld: The Greatest Hits Live’, with tickets available now. The new tour dates kick off with a show at London’s OVO Arena Wembley on 17 June before taking in Aberdeen and Liverpool and then closing in Leeds on 24 June.

‘Dreamworld: The Greatest Hits Live’ tour is Pet Shop Boys’ first ever greatest hits tour and has seen them play shows in the UK and across Europe.

The tour received outstanding reviews with The Guardian describing the Manchester date as “fabulous”, while The Times said the London show was “clever, stylish, sometimes poignant, often euphoric”, and NME praised the Hull performance, describing it as “a two-hour joyous celebration of their decades of holding pop to a higher standard”.

As well as the success of the tour so far, Pet Shop Boys performed a rapturously received headline set last night on The Other Stage at the Glastonbury Festival, closing this year’s 50th Anniversary of the event. The performance is available to watch back on BBC iPlayer here.

Joy Ellis Trio

Joy Ellis is a jazz pianist, singer and composer who, with with long-time collaborators Henrik Jensen on double bass and drummer Adam Osmiansk, will perform new material from her recent album.

In March this year Joy released her third album with long-time collaborators Henrik Jensen on double bass and drummer Adam Osmianski. Recorded at the end of May 2021 her new material has a relaxed and minimalist vibe in keeping with the album’s title, Peaceful Place.

Moving through the pandemic Joy felt there were no words she could sing to capture the grief and sense of loss that she and other people she knew had experienced. Therefore she decided to compose an album with no vocals at all using her other instrument and first love, the piano. Joy has toured all over the UK supported by the Arts Council, England performing her original music at various venues and festivals including Manchester, Cheltenham and London Jazz Festivals and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

The release of this recording is generously supported by Help Musicians Do It Differently Fund.

Dance for Plants: Hot House

Dance for Plants are back to bring you another six-hour sonic adventure! And this time, they’ve bought some of their pals.

We are excited to be playing at Quarry for the first time with two very special guests: Yeti and Rose.

You better believe nothing is off-limits: Bollywood film soundtracks, Italo disco, Arabic reggae, funk and soul heaters, spicy zouk as well as a plethora of niche, wonky electronic stuff!

Like all of our events, this will be not-for-profit, with proceeds donated to Project Seagrass, a UK-based charity that works to maintain marine biodiversity by restoring seagrass species in coastal areas.

As well as this, for every ticket sold, we will be planting a tree with The Future Forest Company. You will even receive a certificate after the event with a unique what3words code so you can see exactly where it is! Come join us to celebrate all that is good about music, and help us do just a little to support our planet. See you there!

Talvin Singh

Percussionist, producer and composer, Talvin Singh, is renowned for creating the bridge between Indian and electronic music. Drawing inspiration from the classical Indian arts, he has managed to sculpt a unique sonic landscape.

Singh’s synthesis of electronic music and Eastern aesthetic is often referred to as Asian Underground, one of the most exciting movements in the history of British music.

He has taken the Tabla to the cutting edge with the most unimaginable sonic creations, which has ultimately helped him to demystify Indian classical music, and therefore inspire a whole new generation of musicians and producers of contemporary music in India and the South Asian diaspora worldwide. Singh’s influence has also spanned the visual arts, dance and film.

Having worked and collaborated with a diverse range of artists, such as Sun Ra, the late Ustad Sultan Khan, Terry Riley, John Martyn and Yoko Ono, he still continues to be as explorative and imaginative in his solo career as well as curating new ventures in contemporary music.

Singh’s debut album ‘OK’ achieved huge acclaim and won Singh the Mercury Music Prize in 1999. He has also been honoured with the South Bank Prize for popular music and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for Services to Music.

Talvin continues to perform internationally, write and produce music, and work as a music director for various creative projects.

After the Flood

Imagine if the world was almost destroyed and there were just a few survivors left. With the goal of building a new positive world from the wreckage of the past, what sort of music would these musicians make?

After the Flood is a conceptual instrumental band hailing from Liverpool, UK featuring guitarist/composers Neil Campbell (Bulbs/Neil Campbell Collective) and Marty Snape (Mighty Zeb/Bulbs), along with Roger Gardiner (Dead Poppies) on Overwater bass and Norwegian ace Viktor Nordberg (Viktor Nordberg Trio) on drums.

The band creates a pan-global music where each musician is an equal part of the whole, drawing on minimalism, folk music, progressive rock, African, Indian and other indigenous musical styles.

At this lunchtime concert, they will perform an extended set of original music drawn from their eponymous 2018 debut album alongside newer tracks and pieces from Neil Campbell’s 2021 album The Great Escape.

Part of the Lunchtime Concert Series.
