United by Land

This summer, renowned land artist James Brunt is coming to Knowsley to create a number of land art installations in some of the borough’s most loved parks.

James along with several other accomplished land artists will descend on the Borough in August to work with local people and communities on a number of outdoor installations at Halewood Triangle, Stadt Moers, Mill Dam and Bowring Parks.

As a warm-up to this project – United by Land – James is working with a number of Knowsley Primary school pupils in May and June to create land art within school grounds. He has also promised to create some ‘pop-up’ land art in secret locations across the borough over the summer months – meaning that anyone taking a stroll in Knowsley might just stumble across a hidden gem of creativity.

Dates and locations for United by Land community events and workshops are taking place as follows:

Summer Forest Bathing at Wavertree Bot...

Forest bathing is a health and wellness practice that derives from the Japanese term ‘shinrin yoku’ which means ‘bathing in the forest atmosphere’ using your senses.

The aim of forest bathing is to help you to slow down and connect to nature by awakening all of your senses. This increases your capacity to be fully present and enables feelings of relaxation and calmness. Research shows that Forest Bathing helps reduce stress, lowers cortisol levels, reduces blood pressure, lowers heart rate, improves concentration and stimulates creative thinking.

This shorter 90 minute mid-week session allows you time to switch off from the busyness of life, to relax, reset and reenergise through the practice of forest bathing.

Where: Wavertree Botanic Gardens, Edge Lane, Innovation Blvd, Liverpool L7 9PL
Meeting Point: exact location confirmed after booking

What to bring?
It is important to come prepared for all weathers!
As it’s a slow-paced session it is important to wear a few warm layers of clothing, waterproof footwear, a drink to keep you hydrated and small snacks if you wish.
At times you may be invited to sit or lie on the ground so it can be helpful to bring a small mat/cushion/bin liner/bag to use for this.

State of Mind Symposium

This November, 20 Stories High will be hosting a special event at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.

Over the past 4 years we have been funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to explore how, as an arts organisation, we place mental health and wellbeing at the heart of the company – what it means for the young people we work with, the professional artists we co-create with, the audiences that see the work and also the team that makes it all happen.

The day will consist of performances, presentations, panel discussions and workshops, led by young people, artist wellbeing practitioners, staff, and the artists who make the work. In the evening there will also be a chance to see a brand new show that has the State of Mind values and processes embedded in the work.

Whether you are a freelance theatre maker, an arts organisation, or a company that values wellbeing –  this is a space to learn more about what we have been doing, as well as share your own practice and explore new ideas.

We are so looking forward to creating a space to explore wellbeing with our sector, and we really hope you can join us. So if this is of interest to you – please do put the date in your diary, and we will be in touch soon with more information about what to expect and how to book on!

There will be BSL interpretation at the event, if you have any other access requirements please contact: amy@20storieshigh.org.uk

The Owl & the Pussy-Cat Sculpture...

After months of planning, preparation (and painting!) Knowsley is almost set to launch one of the highlights of its year as the Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture – the Owl & the Pussy-Cat Sculpture Trail.

From 20 June until 4 September 2022 huge, elaborately decorated, owls and pussy-cats will be out and about across the borough for people to spot and record on a free downloadable app.

Designed and decorated by artists and members of the local community the huge creatures will be popping up all over Knowsley in parks, town centres and other locations – some of which you might not expect. People are encouraged to get out and about, spot the creatures, capture their photos and record them on the app (which will be free to download once the trail launches next month).

The trail was announced in September last year and a competition was launched for artists to submit their design ideas to decorate the 32 large owls and pussy-cat sculptures. In addition, local schools have also been working on designs for a further 50 smaller sculptures which will also be on display in Knowsley during the summer months.

How may can you spot The Owl and The Pussy-Cat Trail?

Download the FREE app now.

The trail commemorates the fact that Edward Lear wrote his world-famous poem – The Owl and the Pussy-Cat – during his time living at Knowsley Hall. You can read more about Edward Lear and his time spent in Knowsley and you can read the famous Owl and Pussy-Cat poem.

The incredible owl and pussycat sculptures have been produced by Wild in Art in conjunction with Knowsley Council. Find out more about Wild in Art here.

An Evening With Johnny Vegas

The second of the Shakespeare North Playhouse’s ‘Evening With’ events sees the baton passed on to one of our best-loved actors and comedians, Johnny Vegas.

Before he’d ever drunk tea with a knitted monkey or become a TV panel game regular, Johnny Vegas was perhaps the most fearlessly confessional stand-up comedian this country has ever produced.

Well known for his angry rants, surrealism, high husky voice and support of St Helens rugby league club, perhaps we’ll find out how an eleven-year-old Catholic trainee priest from St Helens grow up to become the North West’s answer to Lenny Bruce!

The ‘Evening With’ events will work a little bit like your school relay team – the interviewee from the last event passing on the baton to become the interviewer for the next. And so it will go on… Get ready for an evening of fabulously northern conversation.
