Rhod Gilbert and The Giant Grapefruit

When life gives Rhod lemons…

In his last show ‘The Book of John’, Rhod Gilbert was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour…

But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs…with a little help from an old adversary.

Henry Normal & Nigel Planer

Join comedy legend Nigel Planer and Henry Normal, BBC Radio 4‘s ‘poet in reticence’, for a special evening of poetry, stories, jokes, fun, knitwear and maybe a few surprises.

Described by The Scotsman as “‘the Alan Bennett of poetry”, Henry Normal is the BAFTA award-winning writer, poet, TV & Film producer, founder of the Manchester Poetry Festival (now the Literature festival) and co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival. Normal became a pivotal force behind some of the most iconic British TV comedy shows, with production and script editing credits for Mrs Merton, The Royle Family, Gavin & Stacey, Red Dwarf, The Mighty Boosh, and Alan Partridge.

Nigel Planer was an original member of the comedy groups at the centre of the ‘Alternative Comedy’ movement in the 1980s and starred in the seminal TV series The Young Ones, and The Comic Strip Presents. As well as novels, plays and TV and Radio scripts, he has been writing poetry for over fifty years.

Tickets for this event include a £1 venue restoration levy, included in the ticket price. This fee supports building investment at the Grade II-listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Sandi Toksvig: Friends of Dorothy

The show will be packed with silly stories, profound truths, fascinating facts, readings from the book and a quick-fire Q&A. Life affirming, wise and funny, Sandi investigates what it really means to be a ‘Friend of Dorothy’.

Each ticket includes a hardback copy of Sandi Toksvig’s brand-new novel, Friends of Dorothy. (RRP £22.00)

Alasdair Beckett-King

Flame-haired star of Mock The Week, Alasdair Beckett-King will perform The Hot Water Comedy Cub on Saturday 20th April 2024.

Alasdair is a familiar face on television screens and was a Mock the Week favourite for the final two seasons. He’s an award-winning comedian, and last year, won Chortle’s Breakthrough Act of the Year Award.

But he’s perhaps even better known for his online sketches and distinctive animated shorts, many of which have gone mega-viral on YouTube, reaching millions of viewers, you can watch a classic here

With several viral internet hits, appearances on Mock The Week a debut performance on Comedy Central Live and an upcoming debut on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown later this year, two sensational children’s books and a sell-out UK tour last year under his (vegan leather) belt, Alasdair Becket King is thrilled to be bringing his total sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show “Nevermore” to Hot Water Comedy Club on Saturday 20th April 2024.

Sea levels have been rising Alasdair’s whole life. But for the first 16 years he was getting taller, so he didn’t notice. Now 6″2, Alasdair Beckett-King is the only comedian brave enough to speak out against that wet b*stard: The North Sea.

Nevermore is more than an anti-sea diatribe. As a 500-year-old man ABK is uniquely poised to draw parallels between the history of the ever- shrinking British Isles, and his own childhood in the swinging 1990s. The multi award- winning stand-up comedian unravels some of life’s shallowest mysteries:

What are train guards actually guarding?

Why wasn’t Jaws set in County Durham?

Does his hair do that on its own?

Out of the swirling maelstrom he steps, his sword of jokes, his shield of mischief and his armour made of a third amusing thing. The show that many people are calling “Nevermore“ is an island in a sea of existential terror and entirely justified fears. It is silly, faintly mystical and does not (at the time of going to press) feature any ravens. It is also a real show with jokes and everything.

Alasdair Beckett-King won the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year in 2017 and garnered a very enthusiastic critical response plus Amused Moose Comedy Award nomination with his debut Edinburgh show of the same year. Alongside his TV appearances and YouTube fame, he has featured on BBC radio as a comedian and sketch writer and performed stand-up across the UK, at Glastonbury, Citadel Fest, the Udderbelly Southbank and the Fringe. He once won a student RTS award and was nominated for a Student Oscar, but quit filmmaking for stand-up on realising it was a cheaper medium to be unsuccessful in.
