Dave Spikey – Life in a Northern Tow...

This show is all about Dave’s life in ….. well…. a northern town, so no surprise there.

From his working-class childhood in the small, terraced houses round the mills in Bolton through passing his 11 plus and going to grammar school with an ambition to be a doctor which was thwarted just after his “O” levels.  Instead, at 16 getting a job in the Pathology department at Bolton General Hospital and working there for 32 years ultimately as Chief Biomedical Scientist in Haematology before throwing caution to the wind and leaving to pursue a career in comedy, as you do!

He will tell how he turned his microscope off for the last time on October 13th, 2000, and two weeks later found himself on a car park only half a mile down the road singing “Walking on Sunshine” in the pouring rain on a makeshift stage dressed as a giant berry ; while a ten foot c*ck and balls slowly but surely inflated behind him. He wondered at that moment if he’d made the right decision. As it turns out, he had.

John Power – Cast, The La’s, and M...

John Power had the best rock’n’roll apprenticeship ever – playing bass as an 18-year-old in The La’s. Forming Cast in 1991, he sang, wrote songs, and played guitar for one of Britpop’s pre-eminent bands – securing two platinum-selling records before returning to the charts in 2024 with the magnificent Love Is The Call.

Power’s solo career produced some of his best work – and now it’s time to reflect on Britpop, the hits – Alright, Sandstorm, Walkaway, Flying and more – in this intimate show that mixes John’s best-loved songs with wild, funny, and tender stories.

Meet’n’Greet packages available.

Duets: Poetry and Music with Jennifer ...

Join us for the second of two performances with our artist in residence Jennifer Lee Tsai. Lee Tsai will perform readings of her poetry alongside musician Xiaoxiao Hou.

The performance will take place within Michelle Williams Gamaker’s expansive gallery installation, amongst seating made from shredded scripts and posters.

Xiaoxiao (筱潇 xiǎo xiāo) will perform playing the Guzheng 古筝 (gǔ zhēng). Also known as a Chinese zither or harp, the Guzheng is plucked string instrument with a tradition dating back more than 2,500 years. It is not only an instrument, but also a piece of art and decoration. It shows a close relationship between painting and calligraphy, such as carved art, painting, shell carving with jade, and so on. The strings, once made of silk, are these days almost always made from nylon-coated steel, which increases the instrument’s volume as well as changing its timbre. Performers of the Guzheng often wear fingerpicks on one or both hands, which are often made from materials such as ivory, resin or hard plastic.

In Chinese classical music, Guzheng were often used to represent things as grand as mountains, but also as delicate as streamlets. Guzheng players are always elegant and peaceful, like they just walked out from one of the Chinese paintings. The way to play and demonstrate Guzheng music is connected very closely to Chinese philosophies as well as other art forms in Chinese culture.

Duets: Poetry Readings with Jennifer Lee Tsai and Joey Chin

Sat 15 Jun, 2pm

Join us for the first of two performances with our artist in residence Jennifer Lee Tsai. For this event, Lee Tsai will be joined by Joey Chin, an artist and writer based in Birmingham. The readings will take place within Michelle Williams Gamaker’s expansive gallery installation, amongst seating made from shredded scripts and posters.

Chin’s work sits at the intersections of text, narrative and visual art, staged through language, poetry, acts and modes of reading. Her key focus is in the development of personal communications between the self, markings of territoriality, and the inner conversations between the two. Chin has been published by Lungs Project, Litro Magazine, Entropy Magazine, and Cambridge Scholars Publishing.

Lee Tsai’s work explores themes of ancestral trauma, loss, belonging, transformation, rebirth and strength. Her poetry and criticism are widely published in magazines and journals including The Guardian, Poetry London, The Poetry Review, and The White Review. Jennifer received a Northern Writers Award for Poetry in 2020. She is a winner of the 2022 Women Poets’ Prize. Her second poetry pamphlet La Mystérique (2022) is published by Guillemot Press. She currently holds the Whitenham Bursary, a one year studio bursary at Bluecoat aimed at supporting artists in Liverpool.

The readings form part of The Lives of Artists, a season of exhibitions, commissions and events that asks audiences what might be uncovered about ourselves when we listen to the testimony, histories, and stories of artists reflecting on their lives.
