What they say about The Mersey Beatles:

“The next best thing to seeing the original Beatles live” – The Morning Call, USA

“The Mersey Beatles capture the essence of those four boys from Liverpool who changed the world” -Hot Press

“When I saw them play in The Cavern, they perfectly recreated the atmosphere the original Beatles produced. It was just like listening to The Beatles again.” – Joe Flannery, Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein’s assistant

1984

‘To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free: From the age of uniformity, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink… greetings!’

Award winning Box Tale Soup present a stunning new adaptation of Orwell’s dystopian classic.

Known for their ingenious sets and slick storytelling, Box Tale Soup’s unique puppetry becomes a striking metaphor for Orwell’s chilling vision of power and control.

The year is 1984, perhaps – it is impossible to tell for certain. We are being watched, Big Brother is everywhere, truth changes daily, and everyone conforms. But for Winston Smith, insignificant cog in the Party’s vast machine, this half-life is not enough. He dreams of freedom, but is he the only one? Dreams can be deadly when rebellion begins with a thought.

Featuring the voices of Sophie Aldred & Joanna Lumley, with Simon Russell Beale as the voice of Big Brother.

Comedy Club 4 Kids

It’s a comedy club, right, but for kids. Also any adults who enjoy a swear-free hour with the international circuit’s best stand-ups and sketch acts. Non-patronising. Pure awesome.

Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits!

A decade later, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up.

The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face!?”

Reviews:

“Comedy Club 4 Kids has stand-up sets from grown-up, high-quality acts who perform their usual sets, just without the swearing or rude bits.” – The Independent

‘A highlight for children… giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club.’ – The Guardian

‘The perfect way to entertain the whole family.’ – Three Weeks

‘The ethos is just right’ – The Daily Telegraph

‘This show was great!’ – The Scotsman

Troubled Waters

With over 4,000 miles of polluted waterways, Britain and Ireland’s rivers are in ruin.

This vibrant new tapestry of transporting tales winds through stories that have shaped our relationship with rivers, the lifeblood of our landscape.Leaping salmon, fishtail women, mythical raves & sacred springs… These enchanting and surprising tales present characters who question what is set in stone and find their own flow. With each meandering stream and rushing river, we dip our toes into vital waters and ask what new connections are found when we look with fresh eyes beneath the surface?–

Storyteller Corinne Harragin, who has been touring the UK for the last 10 years, uses physicality and humour to reanimate the written-down-ness of story with her own brand of oral performance. Finding pockets of enchanted forest within the hinterland of contemporary urban sprawl, she tells stories that re-centre marginalised voices and silenced histories, bringing fresh questions to ancient myths and folktales for adult audiences. Corinne is a regular guest performer for the touring ‘myth-off’ game show, Story Jam’s ‘Women Who Gave F*cks’.As a research associate at the University of Bristol, her current project Storying the Avon (funded by the Brigstow Institute) explores connection to water through storytelling. She also designs and delivers storytelling and presentation skills training for the universities of Bristol and Gloucestershire. She has recently completed an MA at The University of Bristol, in which she researched contemporary forms of oral storytelling.

Music that changes shape beguilingly: Pixels presents two mirrored versions of pieces by Corelli and Timothy Jackson, revealing them in different lights. Two of Berio’s groundbreaking Sequenzas lie at the heart of an intriguing evening, with nuggets of Stravinsky enriching the Italian theme.

A great city is under siege, and as the bullets fly, the defenders of Leningrad use loudspeakers to blast Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony, defiant and colossal, at the Nazi forces. Everything about the Leningrad Symphony is supersized, and trust us: when Vasily Petrenko conducts it, you’ll feel the air shake. This is music that’s larger than life, and we’ve paired it with an emotional and much-anticipated new concerto by Victoria Borisova-Ollas, co-commissioned by Liverpool Philharmonic and performed for the first time in the UK.

“What beauty!” exclaimed Jean Sibelius, as he saw a flight of swans in the northern sky. They inspired his magnificent Fifth Symphony, and that radiant piece is tonight seamlessly introduced by Finnish composer Rautavaara’s haunting ‘Concerto for Birds and Orchestra’. But conductor Geoffrey Paterson begins with midnight in Madrid, honouring Berio’s 100th birthday with a work that received its UK premiere here in Liverpool from our Orchestra. It’s a wonderful contrast to Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and the all-American sunshine of Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, played by Julian Bliss.
