Toilet Paper Diaries

Artist and DaDa Fellow Porcelain Delaney brings her show to Liverpool.

We meet Eloise in a hospital bathroom, She needs to do a sample but she just can’t go. We jump into her childhood diaries exploring what’s brought her to this moment. Eloise was a happy child, a promising ballerina with no doubt she was going to grow up to be a star.

Then at nine years old her periods start and completely derail her life. She’s thrown face first into a war against gaslighting doctors. They refuse to listen or believe her but she’s determined she will keep getting louder until someone hears. A heartbreaking and hilarious tale which anyone with endometriosis or another condition which has led to medical gaslighting will instantly recognise.

Toilet Paper Diaries had access at the heart of the play and includes creative captions and audio description. There will be an optional touch tour before the play starts.

There will also be BSL interpretation

Standard tickets £5, pay more if you can £10, or contact DaDa on info@dadafest.co.uk if you are facing financial hardship and would like to request a free place

Storm in a Teacup

Storm in a Teacup is a life affirming musical comedy from the creative team that brought you ‘On Cloud 79’ – an authentic play about living well with dementia (2017-2018), ‘Silver Bells and Cocktails’ – an amusing yet truthful look at life during lockdown’ (2021) and ‘Shaken Rattled and Rolled’ (2022).

Join them and the O’Brien family as we take a nostalgic look at life, love and music in the 70s.

All families are strange! The O’Brien siblings haven’t spoken in years. But when big sis, Angie dies, Tony & Bev have to sort through the family stuff. Remembering the 70’s when they were close brings Angie back. With the help of Morecambe and Wise, Sandy Shaw, Bowie, and David Soul, tears turn to laughter…and Pan’s People dancing. Can looking back help us to heal and go forward?  Or are we destined to repeat old, family habits?

Inspired by stories of families within our community ‘Storm In a Teacup’ looks at the petty squabbles that cause major problems. Grudges can go on and on.  Angie O’Brien never forgave little sister Bev for not admiring her new kitchen in 2013. Bev hasn’t spoken to brother Tony since he got drunk at her daughter’s wedding. And Tony has been miffed at the pair of them for as long as he can remember. No-one knows why. What happens if it’s too late to make-up?

I Am Steven Gerrard

Following its highly praised win as part of the inaugural new writing competition What Happens Next? in January this year, Sean McLoughlin’s debut play I Am Steven Gerrard will as part of its prize package receive its first full production at The Hope Street Theatre in January 2024, alongside £1000 production budget and dramaturgical support from Olivier Award-winning Papatango theatre company.

It’s Liverpool. The Champion’s League Final in Istanbul was 13 years ago. The buzz is still rife. The obsession is still real. Steven Gerrard has left Liverpool Football Club, but his legacy keeps on growing; a legacy that Shane wants to embody and emulate. Though Shane shares an ambition no different to many of those around him, it soon transpires that he yearns for something far beyond football.

And in a city where ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is the mantra, why does Shane constantly feel like he’s the only one on the sideline? Shane is back home to see his dad for the first time in three years. To heal old wounds. To attempt to find his place in a world that he has never felt a part of. To get answers. What secrets will come to light? And who will they come from? Could these revelations have saved everyone from heartache?

Written by Sean Mcloughlin and Directed by Amy Roberts, the winner of What Happens Next? 2023 is a story of football, aspiration, music, Steven Gerrard, loneliness, reality television, love, religion, friends, loss, passion, enemies, Davina McCall, politics, ambition, family, virginity, past generations – and the impact they leave behind; I Am Steven Gerrard is a one-man play performed by Joe Cowin that explores the complexities of masculinity, and what it means to be a real man in society today.

Tip Tray Theatre’s artistic directors Evan Byrne and Maisy Gordon are “delighted with the choice of the judges to crown I Am Steven Gerrard as the winner of our first ever new writing competition. Sean’s play captures the beating heart of Liverpool perfectly in a powerful coming-of-age story that is beautifully portrayed in Joe’s performance and Amy’s sharp direction.”

Since 2022 Tip Tray Theatre have been the company in residence at The Hope Street Theatre and are fast creating an exciting and vibrant series of events, which bring together the vast talents the city has to offer. The Hope Street Theatre’s Artistic Director Sam Donovan states “When we first met Evan and Maisy, we could tell instantly the passion and drive they had to make a difference to the creative culture here in the city, the creation of What Happens Next? brought a real buzz to the city with new and old professionals creatively working together to showcase and champion new writing. It is a real honour to be able to support them and this production of I Am Steven Gerrard.”

What Happens Next? Will return directly prior to the run of I Am Steven Gerrard. Submissions for the competition is now open and seeks writers to submit the first 20mins of a play where by the end the audience wants to ask “What Happens Next?” for more information please visit www.tiptraytheatre.com

The Signalman

A ghostly figure has visited the signalman twice already, each time preceding a terrible disaster. When the apparition appears for the third time, it’s up to the signalman to decode its meaning and prevent another catastrophe.

A gripping slice of gothic horror from Charles Dickens, regarded as the greatest horror story ever written.

In the tradition of classic oral storytelling, a lantern and two players is all that is needed to tell the spine tingling tale of the Signalman.

The tour starts at the atmospheric Engine Room at Metal, Edge Hill Station and will visit various locations during November.

Venues include, the idyllic Mansion House, The Reader at Calderstones, 7pm, 18 November and the reputed establishment Liverpool Athenaeum, 23 November. Tickets will be available soon for these last two dates. Check the ArtsGroupie website for regular updates.

After the success of last year’s Ghost Stories for Xmas, which will be returning in December, Artsgroupie is delighted to be working again with esteemed local writer and director David Griffiths,

Liselotte in May

A multi-award winning Hungarian playwright is bringing an acclaimed comedy to Liverpool for one night only this autumn.

On Wednesday 1st November from 7.30pm, The Capstone Theatre will play host to Zsolt Pozsgai’s bittersweet absurd comedy Liselotte in May, by appointment of the Hungarian Consulate.

The hysterical yet poignant production has wowed audiences globally, earning its most recent praise at Camden Fringe Festival. Such is his impact on audiences, playwright Zsolt Pozsgai has received multiple awards such as the European Drama Award and the Hungarian Playwright’s Competition three times.

A Sense of Place

The folks at Valley Theatre offer their latest event for this year’s popular Liverpool Fringe, a showcase of original short plays by Merseyside writers.

Audiences will be entertained by two evenings of short, punchy dramas especially written around the theme: A Sense of Place.

“We wanted to stretch the writers,” explains Tom Mclennan, the event producer. “We asked them to anchor their piece in a particular location. The place itself had to play an important part of the action, be almost like another character in it.”

The theme has certainly produced a wide variety of settings, from the deck of a 19th century ship to the dizzying top of a high-rise building.

“We see the event as part of our continuing commitment to bringing new writing to our theatre,” says Martin Ball, director of Valley Community Theatre. “We believe we have one of the best performance spaces on Merseyside and want to make it as accessible as possible to audiences and artists alike.”

“A Sense of Place” will take place on Friday 6th & Saturday 7th of October and give audiences the chance to see 10 completely new works, five each evening.

Tickets are on sale from www.valleytheatre.co.uk or 07746 697 263

Programme starts at 7.30, doors open 7pm.

Boys from the Blackstuff

This is 80s’ Liverpool. Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie and Yosser are used to hard work and providing for their families. But there is no work and there is no money. What are they supposed to do? Work harder, work longer, buy cheaper, spend less? They just need a chance.

Life is tough but the lads can play the game. Find the jobs, avoid the ‘sniffers’ and see if you can have a laugh along the way.

40 years after Alan Bleasdale’s ground-breaking television series was essential viewing, Liverpool’s Royal Court and Stockroom Productions are delighted to present an unmissable, powerful new adaptation by James Graham, writer of the hit BBC series Sherwood.

Cast confirmed: Dominic Carter, George Caple, Helen Carter, Aron Julius, Oliver Mawdsley, Nathan McMullen, Lauren O’Neil, Andrew Schofield, Barry Sloane and Mark Womack

Irvine Welsh’s Porno

A new stage adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Porno is coming to Liverpool’s Olympia this October, follows a sell-out run at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Fifteen years after Trainspotting, what has become of Renton, Sickboy, Begbie & Spud? Disturbing, shocking & extremely funny. Contains swearing, sexual language, debauchery, drug use and even more swearing. As if you’d expect anything else.

Irvine Welsh’s Porno is a full-length stage adaptation of the novel by the same name, which sold out one of the largest Pleasance venues for a month long run at Edinburgh Fringe in 2022, earning rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.

Mark Renton hasn’t been back to Leith since… well, since he robbed his pals and f*cked off to Amsterdam. Life has been… good? But there’s always been something missing. How will Sickboy, Begbie & Spud react to the return of Renton? Have they all settled down and become respectable members of society? Did they choose life? Of course, they f*cking didn’t!

With an acclaimed cast of Scott Kyle (Outlander, Kilo Two Bravo, The Angel’s Share) as Renton, James McAnerney (Outlander, NEDs, Taggart, Rebus, Nightsleeper) as Sickboy, Jasmine Main (The Nest, Scot Squad, BAFTA Scotland Award Nominee) as Lizzie, Chris Gavin (Days That Shook The World, Starcaster) as Begbie, Kevin Murphy as Spud and Jim Brown as Knox. Porno is written and produced by the award-winning Davie Carswell and directed by Jonty Cameron.

Mark Thomas in England & Son

Set when The Great Devouring comes home, England & Son is a one-man play written specifically for the award-winning political comedian Mark Thomas by award-winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack, Paines Plough’s Roundabout, Soho and UK tour).

This is the first play Mark has ever performed in that he has not written himself.

With some deep, dark laughs-and some deep, dark love-along the way, England & Son emerges from characters Mark knew in his childhood and Ed’s lived experience in jail.

Prepare for Mark to take you on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, empire, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.
