Live Storytelling session – TREE

Showcasing Arts Groupie’s next piece of theatre TREE, come along to a live rehearsal which is going to be developed for ArtsGroupies’s Summer 2022/23 programme. TREE warns about the throwaway society we live in and promotes sustainability through the narrative of a fairy story.

They are also working with the University of Liverpool on a project around local communities and their relationship to their local environments and climate change, developing and delivering ‘Weather Walkshops.’

This piece is in the very early stages of development and ArtsGroupie regulars, Samantha Alton, Ellis Murphy and John Maguire will deliver a reading of the piece under the direction of Artistic director Margaret Connell.

An informal question and answer session will follow with the audience offering advice, suggestions and to generally start a conversation about our relationship with the environment and the role that storytelling has in helping to raise awareness.

Away from the many, many dog walker tracks in Childwall valley woods, there is a wasteland of woodland bramble. During the summer months this part of the wood is unreachable, layered in a thick carpet of blackberry bushes, nettles and thorns.

The rest of the forest is always quite busy, people taking their dogs for a daily walk or teenage wildlife hanging around sneakily smoking or drinking cheap cider, thinking they’re the first people to ever do such a thing.

The wood needs to be enjoyed because like most of the cities green space it is richly sought after for property development. Green lungs slowly being choked by concrete and asphalt.

In this normally unreachable part of the woodland there lived a dainty little Fir Tree. This tree was far from content….

Horti-Culture Sharing Sessions with Ar...

Join in for some 15- minute taster workshops sampling the creative arts sessions that ArtsGroupie are running as part of the Horti-Culture programme at Incredible Edible Knowsley.

The programme is aimed at children and families. The weekly classes follow Inspector Hogarth and Constable Sprout as they investigate how things grow in your garden/greenspace. (Horti)

They are on the look out for all growing activities conducting their research and solving cases at Horti-Culture HQ at Court Hey Park, with their friends from Incredible Edible Knowsley and Artsgroupie. Through workshops families can come and help our heroes as they experiment with growing from seed to fully-grown plant.

They then run creative writing workshops and arts activities (culture) to help collate the findings in a journal or sketchbook. To see how the environment can also inspire and let your creativity grow too.

At Court Hey they run varied drama workshops and have just completed a course in image work with 7 -11 year olds .

ArtsGroupie has used shadow puppetry throughout our theatre work to date, to express everything from a storm at sea to a fairy tale in Medieval Europe. The project involved introducing children to this captivating and imaginative form of expression.

Liver Bird Safari with ArtsGroupie

An alternative way to discover the history of Liverpool.

Liverpool is famous for the birds on the magnificent Liver Building, the first ever Skyscraper in the UK. But there are in fact over 100 Liver Birds in the City.

Join in for a lively, fun WALKING TOUR safari around the waterfront, starting at Open Eye Gallery, as they go Liver Bird-spotting and learn about the history of Liverpool along the way.

The tour promotes healthy living, mindfulness and getting to know your city, physically demonstrating Arts Groupie’s approach to creating theatre which has a low environmental impact, utilises local green space and promotes locality.

They piloted  the walk tours as a new business model over the last year, running heritage walking tours in Liverpool City Centre. They use this as a way of creating income generation to fund our community theatre outreach projects. Last year we used profit from their walking tours to stage an interactive outdoor play called The Liver Bird,

ArtsGroupie’s first production out of lockdown was the outdoor theatre interactive extravaganza, The Liver Bird, a collaboration with the marvellous The Bookworm Players. It was funded by Arts Council England and profits made from the walking tours.

It opened in Incredible Edible, Court Hey Park in the Summer of 2021 and was the first theatrical play to visit Walton Hall Park in over forty years. The piece was performed throughout the Liverpool City Region, including Norris Green Park, Springfield Park and Devonfield Gardens.

The Bird even flew indoors to land on stage at Liverpool Central Library as part of the Liverpool Year of Writing, Writers Bootcamp and Marketplace that saw 922 creatives and the public come together for a celebration of workshops and literary activities.

The piece was filmed by the amazing team at VideOdyssey  and screened over the Holiday period. It is suitable for all the family and all ages. The play will return this summer.

Their walking tours offer an alternative way to learn the history of Liverpool, The Liver Bird Safari, touring the many, many Liver Birds in the City Centre, the Kitty Wilkinson and William Roscoe Walking tours, which transport people back to Victorian Liverpool through the eyes of the iconic historical characters.

Sickert Pop-Up

The Youth Engagement Forum at National Museums Liverpool would like to invite all young people from across the city to participate in their Walter Sickert Pop-Up event at Walker Art Gallery.

No previous knowledge of art or Walter Sickert is required. The Youth Engagement Forum have created their first major event and have produced and designed some fun and engaging activities for all visitors to take part in.

Storytelling & Poetry:

Join John Hughes, Storyteller and Poet as he does a storytelling performance at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm inspired by the Sickert Exhibition.

John Hughes is a storyteller, performance poet and writer who works with children and young people. Renowned for his interactive performances, creative writing workshops, games, riddles and truly painful jokes, John loves having imaginative fun with words and encourages others to do the same.

He works in schools, libraries, museums, galleries, hospitals, festivals, shopping centres, zoos and, well, almost anywhere, really. Basically, he’s not that fussy. He’s also a pop star (in his dreams), a dancer (in his kitchen) and an expert chocolate taster (in his pyjamas). “John Hughes is amazing,” says John’s mum.

Join young people from the Youth Engagement Forum to write your own poetry and creative writing inspired by the Sickert Exhibition.

Pop up Theatre:

Join the team for some relaxing music that inspired Sickert from the music halls and theatres in his paintings and draw like Sickert did!

Sketch like Sickert:

Looking at Sickert’s drawings and paintings as an inspiration, draw on their long roll of paper and help to create a collaborative drawing.

Young people from the Youth Engagement Forum will be around all day to give talks to young people about Sickert’s artwork and the Youth Engagement Forum.

All activities are free of charge, no booking is required. Discover more about the Youth Engagement Forum.

Stargazing

Join the team for a special night of space exploration. Aimed at adults and older children, the event will be packed with guest lectures, special planetarium shows, practical demonstrations and even telescope stations to view the night sky!

See their new Planetarium in action, with new extra shows and take part in a quiz with Amelia Piper via zoom.

Suitable for all levels of interest, these events are aimed at adults and children aged 8 and above, although there will be some activities for younger siblings as well. You can join at any time in the evening as long as you have your ticket.
