Tang yuan (Chinese: 湯圓 / Viet: Sủi dìn / bánh trôi nước) is a glutinous rice dumpling dessert served in a sweet hot broth. In Chinese, the dumplings are translated as “soup balls”, or as “floating water cakes” from Vietnamese.
As they make the dessert, they will be sharing stories and recipes that express what togetherness and family mean to you. They will also be making origami whilst listening to a playlist of music that engages with themes of migration, identity, belonging and, of course, food!
This workshop is led by Bettina Fung, Cuong Pham and Annie Jael Kwan from Asia-Art-Activism and is part of World Wide Wontons (WWW), a project of stories, recipes and practices that centres food as politics and opens up discussions around migration, identity, and belonging.
This workshop will begin at 15:30 and take place in The Box. The Box will be open from 15:00 if you would like to settle before the workshop starts.
This event is part of their Lunar New Year Weekend at FACT.

Cyanotype, also known as sun printing, is a 180-year-old photographic printing process. It is a unique and easy process which produces printed patterns and silhouettes onto light sensitive paper. It’s fun, easy and great for experimentation. This workshop is ideal for beginners, no experience necessary. All materials are included and results in one A4 print and three A6 greetings cards.
During the workshop you will be introduced to the basics of the cyanotype printmaking process, see all the necessary tools needed and learn about using natural light or U.V light to achieve different results. This session brings together FACT board’s artist in residence, Jack Tan, FACT board member, Matthew Balnaves and artist, curator and cultural futurist Lauren Craig to consider accounting and accountability.
The panel will consider ways of drawing on other world views of accounting, to reconsider who and what is accounted for and the stories they represent, allowing them to shift the ways in which an institution is held to account. This session will be moderated by FACT’s Head of Programme, Maitreyi Maheshwari.
This event follows Jack’s recent Performing Trust conversation with Rachel Higham and Jane Wentworth from Framework for Trust, which questioned how to build, maintain and explore trust through organisational work and policy-making.
