Simone Ellul – Be (a) Present!

In this workshop we will explore what is already present and work on not creating anything new. They will explore the importance of listening and of being truly present in a moment and the emotional response we may have.

Staying in the moment, not forcing the comedy in a situation, relying on what is already there, these elements help to give a scene more weight, lending itself to dramatic possibilities while at the same time not blocking the comedic opportunities present in any human situation.

Owen Scrivens – Death, Dying and...

Owen Scrivens has been improvising for 20 years. He has performed and taught regularly in Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield during this time with companies such as Sticky Floor Improv, Impropriety, Open Heart Theatre and Playing Dead Theatre.

He has also learned from teachers across Europe in a variety of improv styles. His main interest is where theatre and improvisation intersect, but this does not need to mean losing the fun and humor of spontaneous performance. At this years festival Owen will be performing Old Haunts; a show that has accessibility at its heart trying to reduce barriers to improvisation. He currently is director and teacher for SaSS Improv in Sheffield.

Over the last two years Owen has co-created Living.Dying.Dead an improvised theatre show that engages its audience on the subjects of death, dying and bereavement. The show was performed at last years festival but this year there is a workshop to further explore the subject.

They will look different ways of approaching death, from the absurd to the realistic. They will also dig in to the joys that truth, deep connection and emotion can bring in improv.

This workshop is suitable for any improvisers or performers that are willing to fully embrace the challenge of dealing with the subject of death.

Sauerkraut for Beginners

Fermentation has been around for centuries, and it has certainly been making a comeback these past few years. However, it can sometimes seem a bit daunting and there is a common misconception that making ferments from scratch should be limited to seasoned fermenters and experienced chefs.

This workshop aims to make fermentation accessible to all, so that you can confidently start your own projects at home. They’ll cover the basics of lacto-fermentation, learn about health & safety measures, and end with a little tasting session exploring various ferments made with local or foraged produce.

You will make and take home your own unique jar of sauerkraut, and get to experiment with different flavours using herbs and seeds (foraged or grown on-site). You will also receive an information booklet with all the information you need to start your own lacto-ferments at home.

Fermentation is a healthy and creative way to add more veg into your diet. It is also a fantastic way to capture seasonal flavours.

About the Teacher

Diane is a classically-trained pastry chef, now making sourdough bread at Fika+ (Chester), and working on the field at Cheshire Market Gardens. Passionate about sustainability, she makes a point of using locally-grown produce as much as possible, often turning to foraging & fermenting to minimise waste and use ingredients to their full potential.
