Chinese Brush Painting – Lunar N...

This workshop will provide a gentle introduction to Chinese painting using traditional and authentic Chinese art materials such as bamboo brushes, mineral paints and chinese ink.

We will introduce the materials to you via an initial demonstration which will also teach you some basic brushwork and painting techniques. After that, using Bamboo-brushes and rice paper you will paint for yourself! The workshop will be broken down into multiple session that each begin with a teacher demonstration she will then be at hand to provide continued guidance. Each session will teach you a different style which will help you build up to your final piece which will be painted onto a Rice paper board or Rice paper fan.

Our teacher Ula Fung has more than 15 years of teaching experience and is a local practicing artist. She studied her art degree and then Masters back home in Hong Kong.

Whether you’re an aspiring artist looking for a new challenge or you’ve always wanted to learn how to paint, you’ll love this creative workshop experience. This workshop is suitable for all levels.

This workshop is located at GPO Foodmarket, a venue full of street food selections from all over the globe, food & drink is available before, during and after the workshop.

*Towards the end of the workshop there will be an opportunity for you to get your photo taken. We will use these photos for social media and promotional use. Please let us know if you’re not comfortable with this.

Knowledge required

• Beginner friendly – all levels welcome.

Materials (all provided)

• Chinese mineral paint, ink, rice paper, rice paper board & felt mats.

What you’ll get

• All of the equipment and materials needed for your class.

• Protective equipment such as aprons.

What to bring

• Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little paint on.

• A carrying bag for take your artworks home.

Free creative writing course, Write to Work presents The Writer’s Bloc.

Community, Creativity and Confidence

Are you economically inactive* but interested in joining a creative community where you can further your skills as a writer, develop your confidence, and have your stories heard?

Then a FREE one-day ‘Writer’s Bloc’ event could be perfect for you. Attend in person or take part via Zoom!

No writing experience necessary, a chance to work with professional writers, and everyone who attends will be able to submit their work for publication in a printed anthology available to buy online and in bookshops across the city.

18+

You must be economically inactive – (Not employed/self-employed, not actively looking for work, not waiting to start a job, not in full-time education (part time over 19+yrs is fine))

Living in Liverpool City Region including the parts of the Wirral listed as Merseyside, Liverpool, Sefton, Halton, St Helens, Knowsley

You must have the legal right to live and work in the UK

You cannot have already completed any Write to Work Course or mentoring previously.

Family Activity: Weathered

Come along and make art with the weather and nature this February half term!

Divide the light and make a rainbow, draw your own pictures and transform them with rain, or make a sculpture that shows how wind moves! Join our free family workshops in our Learning Space this half term. Take your creations home with you to continue your experiments outside or add to our collective wind sculpture.

This activity is inspired by artists in the Tate Collection who invite the weather into their creative process. Some examples include David Medalla’s giant bubble machine, Olafur Eliasson’s giant sun inside of Tate Modern and Jessica Warboys’ Sea Painting made with the waves around Tate St. Ives.

Please note these artworks are not currently on display at Tate Liverpool. The sun, waves that paint and bubble machine are in the Tate Collection.

Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy

Celebrate Lunar New Year at Bluecoat, and explore the rich traditions of Chinese Calligraphy that dates back 2000 years.

Join Bluecoat for an immersive workshop facilitated by multidisciplinary artist Pei Yee Tong, where you’ll learn about the rich history and ancient techniques of this timeless art form, and be guided through creating your own beautiful artwork to hang up at home.

Beyond motif: Painting Masterclass for...

Join artist Danny Cameron, whose painting is currently featured in the John Moores Painting Prize Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, for a painting workshop inspired by his artwork.

For this workshop, Danny Cameron will show you his artwork and talk about his inspirations and processes. This will lead on to creating ideas for your own painting which you’ll get to take home. You’ll use a mixture of materials including brush pens and paint to experiment with the different painting and drawing processes and techniques.

All materials are included and no previous experience needed.

This workshop is aimed at young people aged 16-24 years old who are  keen to find out more about different techniques for their future practice, career or for fun, but people over 25 years old are also welcome to book on.

Lion dance workshop: Chinese New Year

Celebrate Chinese New Year this February half term with China Spirit UK.

Join the team as they explain the history and tradition of the Chinese lion while children learn how to work the life size puppets in pairs, learn the rhythm of the traditional lion dance drum and the special lion dance steps to bring the lions to life!

Sessions take place at 11am, 1 and 2pm and last 45 minutes each.

Tickets cost £3 per child and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

16-24 Print Club: LGBTQ+ History Month

Are you 16-24 and looking for a creative outlet, to meet new people, or just to try something new? We welcome all 16-24 year olds to join us for our regular programme of Linocut workshops for young people at Walker Art Gallery.

​​In this workshop, you’ll be learning how to design and cut out your Lino to create your own unique item to take home with you. This technique can be used to create t-shirts, prints, tote bags and more, so it’s great for personalised items for yourself, or for creating gifts!

These sessions we will focus on a different theme each time to serve as inspiration for discussions and designs  – the theme of this session will be LGBTQ+ History Month. This series can be enjoyed as a regular club if you would like to come to all sessions on an ongoing basis, or you can come as a one off / to the specific sessions that interest you – it’s completely flexible.

All materials are included for these sessions, and no previous experience is needed. This session is free of charge, but tickets must be booked in advance.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love!

Reward a loved one (or yourself) for lovely gestures and grand achievements with a hand-embroidered rosette this Valentine’s Day! Do you have a friend who makes a killer tikka masala? Head along to their Valentine’s embroidery session to make a custom award for that person (or pooch) that brightens up your life.

This craft session is ticketed and for ages 16+. All materials will be provided and no prior experience is necessary as you’ll be guided through the session by keen embroiderer Nicole Marnell.
