Intro to Beekeeping: Honey Harvesting

The bees at Make Hamilton have been working hard over the summer months, gathering nectar and pollen and building up stores of honey in their hives. The honey will be harvested at the end of summer, and this workshop gives you the opportunity to experience the harvesting first-hand.

The workshop is split into two parts. First, we will introduce you to how a hive works, and how the bees store their honey. We will talk through the cycle of honey production, and the life of a colony through a typical year. We’ll pull on beekeeping veils and head outside where you’ll have the chance to look inside a hive to see the bees working on their honeycomb.

In the second part of the workshop we will return indoors to experience the process of extracting honey by spinning honeycomb frames. You will handle honeycombs, and experience the smells and stickiness that go with that! You’ll get to use the extractor, and watch the honey being spun out of the frames then collected for bottling.

The session is very interactive, and will respond to the questions and interests of participants. The session is led by John, who has kept bees for many years, and is the resident beekeeper at Make.

All equipment/ protective bee suits will be provided, but please come wearing long sleeved tops, full length trousers and closed shoes (i.e. no sandals).

Trauma Informed Practice for Participa...

Although it’s very important to maintain the distinction between art and therapy, participatory artists are often in positions where they need to support their participants’ mental health. This training is specifically for artists and facilitators and takes a person-centred approach to understanding trauma and incorporating this understanding into your creative practice.

This training will:

  • Provide an overview of the physiology of trauma and an insight from the perspective of a clinical psychotherapist;
  • Unpick popular perceptions and misuse of language around trauma and PTSD;
  • Offer practical tips for creating safe spaces for participants and avoiding practices which may retraumatise participants;
  • Create a space to explore problem solving using real-life scenarios.

This event is aimed at artists working in communities, theatre-makers and activists interested in using the arts as a tool for positive change.

Length: 3 hours

Ticket Cost:

  • For attendees supported by their organisations the full price of a ticket is £55.00

Reaching Excluded Communities – ...

How can we create an open atmosphere that builds power within and between excluded groups?

Much of participatory arts aims to work with communities who are seen as marginalised, using the arts and culture to redress inequality. Often these communities are talked about as ‘hard to reach’ or ‘excluded’ from the mainstream, however the networks within them make them strong and resilient to change.

This event will open with provocations from guest speakers based on their experiences of building and maintaining meaningful relationships within and across communities.

Following the provocations and Q&A, attendees will be invited to reflect on these themes and what these ideas mean for their communities, arts practice and the participatory art sector more widely.

Event Format: Open Spaces are participant-led events where the agenda and discussion are driven by those in the room. At the beginning of the event guest speakers will introduce some key ideas, principles and practices behind the theme and offer provocations for discussion. Together we set the agenda and you will be able to move freely between conversations.

Ticket Cost: £5.00

We also have a small number of bursary places available for those with limited funds, please email info@collective-encounters.org.uk

Access: This event will use live transcription. If you require any other access support please get in touch before the event
