Africa Oyé have launched a new series of online music workshops for children.

As well as working with schools directly this spring, the workshops are available to view any time by the general public via Africa Oyé’s Youtube and Facebook channels.

For over 17 years, the festival team has worked closely with local schools and community centres in their annual outreach programme, the Oyé ‘Learning and Participation’ project. Whilst restrictions have meant the workshops have had to move online this year, it means a much bigger audience will now be able to take part, via Oyé’s social media pages.

In previous years, the Liverpool institution has hosted workshops with artists from a range of backgrounds – including tutors from the likes of Madagascar, Cape Verde and Zimbabwe, as well as Merseyside-based workshop leaders.

The first set of online workshops in 2021 will see classes taken by two Cameroonian stars; a percussion session with world renowned drummer, Guy Nwogang, and a vocal masterclass from singer, Valérie Ekoumé.

Through their Learning and Participation workshops, Oyé harness young people’s enthusiasm for music and culture, whilst adding richness to the national curriculum. Those who take part get the opportunity to interact with artists and learn valuable skills, which can be applied to situations inside and outside of a school setting.

If you would like to hear more about Africa Oyé’s upcoming education projects – or register your interest as a school or youth group – please email rebecca@africaoye.com.
