Liverpool Saxophone Day 2022  is an action packed day for all Sax players.

The day long event features workshops and masterclasses from BBC’s Young Jazz Musician of the year 2018 and rising UK sax star Xhosa Cole, plus the North’s leading jazz tenorist/ educator Dean Masser.

Bring your sax and join in the ensemble classes hosted by prolific International sax expert and composer Andy Scott, and also peruse and try out all the latest sax models and paraphernalia at the many trade stalls.

Liverpool Sax Day ticket holders get automatic FREE entrance to the highly anticipated Liverpool International Jazz Festival Xhosa Cole evening concert, PLUS FREE entrance to the Neil Yates/ Dean Masser Quintet aftershow party (you must book your ticket to the aftershow party as there is only a 60 capacity).

11:00AM – 4:00PM – TRADE SHOW – Ground Floor, Cornerstone Building

On the ground floor of the Cornerstone you will be immediately greeted by the trade exhibition. A host of saxophones, mouthpieces and accessories available to peruse, try, purchase/order – displayed by the leading saxophone manufacturers and companies: D’Addario Woodwinds, Trevor James, Vandoren, P Mauriat, Marca reeds, SaxLab, SaxRax, Hiscox, Otto Link, Meyer, Legere reeds, Keyleaves, Syos, JHS, Barnes & Mullins, Curly Woodwind …

12:00PM – 2:00PM – DEAN MASSER JAZZ MASTERCLASS/ PERFORMANCE – Warehouse Theatre, Ground Floor, Cornerstone Building

The North’s leading jazz tenor sax player/ educator returns this year to discuss/ demonstrate his authenticate approach to improvisation in the bop idiom.

After graduating from Leeds College of Music, Dean Masser became a member of the Jack Parnell Quartet, which recorded a live album during a week-long stint at Ronnie Scott’s. Since then, Dean has played alongside many of the leading names in British jazz at numerous venues and festivals. He has many television and radio appearances to his credit, and released his first album as leader in 2010.

Learn all aspects of Dean’s approach and method, plus he’ll be demonstrating/ performing with a live rhythm section so you can really hear how these ideas work practically. Suitable for ALL players interested in improvisation (you do NOT need your instrument).

12:00PM – 1:15PM – ANDY SCOTT’S MASS SAX ENSEMBLE – Great Hall, First Floor, Cornerstone Building

Bring your sax and join in the fun! If you’re not familiar with Andy Scott, he is the one of the UK’s leading sax specialists/composers and chances are you’ve played some of his compositions out of popular music publications and examination grades. Multi nominated, British Composer Award winner, founder member of the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, Tutor of Saxophone at Royal Northern College of Music, the list goes on and on! Andy has prepared some great pieces for everyone to play during this ensemble class. You’ll be able to play with many other sax enthusiasts and gain some useful technical hints from the great man himself. Suitable for ALL players, ALL levels (there will be simpler and more advanced parts available)- bring your music stand! In association with Henri Selmer Paris, Vandoren Paris & Astute Music

1:45 PM- 2:15PM – ANDY SCOTT PERFORMANCE & LECTURE – Great Hall, First Floor, Cornerstone Building

A saxophone performance by Andy Scott playing pieces from his compositional repertoire of various styles. Andy will also be talking about his career as a professional saxophonist and composer. Suitable for ALL players (you do NOT need your instrument). In association with Henri Selmer Paris, Vandoren Paris & Astute Music

2:30PM – 4:00PM – XHOSA COLE MASTERCLASS – Warehouse Theatre, Ground Floor, Cornerstone Building

An up close and personal masterclass with Liverpool International Jazz Festival’s headlining act , the critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer Xhosa Cole. In 2018 he was the recipient of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award and has since: performed alongside artists including Monty Alexander and Courtney Pine and as a soloist for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; had the opportunity to perform at prestigious venues and events including the BBC Proms, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and Ronnie Scotts; and In 2020 received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Newcomer as well as having been nominated for the Jazz FM Breakthrough act.

In this masterclass, the very personable Xhosa talks about his approach to saxophone playing, performance, improvisation and so on, giving a useful insight prior to the evening’s performance over in the Capstone Theatre. Suitable for ALL players(you do NOT need your instrument).

2:45PM – 4:00PM – ANDY SCOTT’S MASS SAX ENSEMBLE WITH RHYTHM SECTION – Great Hall, First Floor, Cornerstone Building

Bring your sax and join in the fun! The second Ensemble class of the day gives you the opportunity to perform Andy’s Group S compositions with a live rhythm section. Again, Andy will be directing and giving tips on various techniques throughout the class. Suitable for ALL players (there will be simpler and more advanced parts available) – bring your music stand! In association with Henri Selmer Paris, Vandoren Paris & Astute Music

CORNERSTONE CAFE will be open throughout the day serving a wide selection of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks.

7:00PM – 9:30PM – XHOSA COLE TRIO, LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL – The Capstone Theatre

Xhosa Cole – saxophone, James Owston – bass, Jim Bashford – drums

Winner of the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the year, Xhosa Cole is an embodiment of the success of numerous community arts programmes in Birmingham including the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, Jazzlines Ensemble and Birmingham Music Service. Having grown up in Handsworth and first played the Tenor at Andy Hamilton’s Ladywood Community Music School, he’s now among a long legacy of Birmingham Saxophonists including Soweto Kinch and Shabaka Hutchings. Xhosa has performed twice at the BBC Proms, Composed music for the Ripieno Players, a Birmingham Based String Orchestra, recorded saxophone for Mahalia’s debut album Love and Compromise, completed a 22 date UK tour, all along side his studies as a scholar at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Xhosa Also received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2019 and Jazz FM ‘Breakthrough act of the year’.

Xhosa’s earliest memories of the arts are with ACE Youth Dance group. However, since playing in Holyhead School’s Jazz band with Ray Prince and Sid Peacock he decided to pursue music and joined the Jazzlines Ensemble, Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra, Midland youth Jazz Orchestra among others. Xhosa attended courses with the National Youth Jazz Collective and National Youth Wind Orchestra. He is now finishing his degree in Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London alongside a wide spectrum of work writing and performing across the UK. in 2019 Xhosa received the Parliamentary Jazz award for ‘Best Newcomer”

James Owston is a Birmingham based double bassist, composer, educator and a highly active member of the UK jazz scene. As a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire he received personal tutoring from esteemed bassists, Mark Hodgeson and Arnie Somogyi. Over the past few years, James has been playing extensively and recording with artists including Clark Tracey, Paul Dunmall, Neil Yates, Jay Phelps, Xhosa Cole and many more.

Jim Bashford is a drummer and composer who resides in Birmingham UK. He is a faculty member at the Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Course, a course in which he studied back in 2004, and has been a great mentor to many young musicians coming out of the Birmingham scene for many years. Jim has developed and evolved his style alongside many legends including Drew Gress, Jean Toussaint and Hilmar Jensen.

10:00PM – 1:00AM – LIVERPOOL JAZZ FESTIVAL AFTERSHOW PARTY with NEIL YATES/ DEAN MASSER QUINTET plus special guests – The Tempest, Tithebarn Street, Liverpool

And finally, together with PARRJAZZ and Liverpool International Jazz Festival, we bring you a very special intimate performance by the stunning Neil Yates/ Dean Masser quintet. Quite simply the finest trumpet/ tenor led outfit in the North – expect some special guests to grace the stage at this superhip, cosy venue. Entrance is free to Liverpool Sax Day attendees but you must book tickets as the capacity is only 60. (*** due to the venue’s policy, this is an OVER 18’s only event).
