Sculpture & Still Life Drawing Workshop

Admission £35
Start Time 11:00
End Time 16:30

Inspired by the sculptor, Mária Bartuszová, and her explorative ways of working, and the works of sculptor, painter and photographer, Constantin Brâncuși, this workshop allows the student to explore and develop their own artistic practice.

Alongside making their very own unique Plaster of Paris artwork, this workshop goes beyond the physical activities of making, by examining influences, ideas, materials, tools and skills. Culminating in a group crit of the finished works – These “crits” are detailed discussions where the opinions of tutors and peers are shared openly, in a positive, inspiring and formal way.

This workshop will be presented by Jason Nicholas Selby, a University of the Arts, London, Central Saint Martins graduate, who is himself an artist and creative workshop coordinator and lecturer.

Content:

Part 1 – Introduction: A brief examination of the works and methodologies of Mária Bartuszová and Constantin Brâncuși. Their styles of work, inspirations and the materials they used.

Part 2 – Consider, Calculate and Direct: Before the “making” part of this workshop begins, students are encouraged to exam, and discuss their own influences and ideas, the materials they will use, and the tools and skills needed. This part also allows the student to discuss and sketch out their ideas for the finished piece.

Part 3 – Make: Using techniques inspired by Mária Bartuszová, students get to make their own unique Plaster of Paris sculpture, whilst considering the sculptures of Constantin Brâncuși and his use of different materials.

Part 4 – Still Life Drawing: Once the individual artworks have been completed and displayed, students will now have the opportunity to draw their artwork.

Part 5 – Group Crit: Students are asked to view their fellow students work, make notes if needed and then discuss the works being exhibited.

Part 6 – Question and Answers / Final Thoughts
