Exploring Identity Through Zine Making...

Join Comics Youth, who use creativity to support people’s mental health, wellbeing and access to the arts, in their zine making workshop!

You will learn about the history of zine making and how to make your own, then create a zine focusing on LGBTQ+ identities and experiences. There are no limitations to how you express yourself in this workshop, you could make your zine about your favourite shirt that brings you gender euphoria, you could explore iconic LGBTQ+ icons or you could share your personal journey as an LGBTQ+ person. There are no boundaries when it comes to creativity, so they will be leaving the binary at the door and helping you tap into your imagination.

The zines made at this workshop have the opportunity to be published and shared at our LGBTQ+ History Month event in February 2024, which will see people come together to celebrate our diverse community through your zine launch, talks by LGBTQ+ youth and arts-based workshops on the day! So come and take part if you’d like to try something new, meet like-minded people and have your work distributed across the city.

This session is open to anyone aged 12+ who identifies as LGBTQ+ or is questioning. You do not need any previous experience with zine making or the arts, this is a space to learn a new skill and develop new ways to express yourself!

This is a safe space that will not tolerate any bigotry, use of slurs or triggering content. Please do let them know if you have any access needs that they should be aware of so that we can make the workshop as fun for you as possible!

This workshop is free but places are limited so please book your ticket below.

John Moores Painting Prize Talk: Emma ...

Join this talk on gallery to explore the themes surrounding the painting selected as the Lady Grantchester prize winner ‘Hurl’, led by Emma Roche.

“These works are primarily concerned with the mechanics and history of painting and are motivated by abstraction and experimentation. Images in the work often indicate liquids such as tears and bodily excretions. I am drawn toward the molten qualities of paint and how it is mimetic of these corporeal liquids.

The process is slow. I make long lines of acrylic paint, extruded through a syringe and then lay them out to dry. Once dry, they are peeled off and used as if wool or thread – the paint strands are literally knitted together (with knitting needles) to make the painting.

Preliminary drawings on gridded paper are used as craft charts to work from – each square represents a stitch to build the image. Physically questioning the ‘gesture’ through this purposefully irreverent and ridiculous use of materials and subverting the heroic history of painting is also of interest. This process corresponds to the humdrum of daily repetitiveness and physically records and stores time.”

Tickets for this talk are £5 and include entry to the exhibition.

Short Course: Introduction to Egyptian...

Hieroglyphs were used for well over 3000 years to write the Egyptian language in monumental settings and was the script some of the most important texts were written in.

In this course we will look at the basics of how to read real hieroglyph inscriptions, using real texts from monumental settings in Egypt as well as texts from the collections at World Museum Liverpool. No prior knowledge of hieroglyphs is needed and although no knowledge of Ancient Egypt is required, a basic understanding of the culture and history will be beneficial to participants.

The fee for this course is £80 per participant. This includes four facilitator-led sessions at World Museum Liverpool. The course will run across 4 Saturday afternoons, 1-3pm on-

6, 13, 20, 27 January 2024

We aim to make our courses as accessible as possible and if there is anything they can put into place to help you attend please get in contact with the course facilitator, Matt Exley, on Matt.Exley@liverpoolmuseums.org.uk

John Moores Painting Prize | Artist ta...

Join the team for this talk on gallery to explore the themes surrounding the shortlisted painting ‘Other Light’, led by Damian Taylor.

Focusing on his work in the JMPP, Old Light, Damian will discuss his wider interest in reimagining the material and technical foundations of painting, and how it can respond to the sweeping changes in visual culture that have resulted from digital technologies.

He will locate this in relation to earlier periods of profound change, notably the introduction of photography in the middle of the nineteenth century and address his interest in trying to make images that are unstable or unfixed. In this spirit, he will welcome interactions and interruptions from visitors throughout the talk.

Tickets for this talk include entry to the exhibition.
