Colliers Moss artworks and stories

Join in with a creative project all about Colliers Moss Common, 130 hectares of habitats on the site of the old Bold Colliery and Bold Power Station.

Working together with collaborative art duo Juneau Projects, you’ll help create a guide and activity book that will be available free to local residents. The book will contain information and illustrations about local wildlife, history and things to do on the Moss.

You can take part by making illustrations (no art experience needed!) and by chatting about your experiences and observations on ‘the Moss’.

A creative workshop where you’ll make wildlife and landscape illustrations using paint, paper-cutting and more. You’ll also have the chance to share stories and memories of the Moss.

Thursday 17th August, 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm, Derbyshire Hill Family Centre

Kerolaina Linkevica – Primordia

Kerolaina Linkeviča (Laīna) presents Primordia (2022), an immersive online work inspired by research into Goddess/Goddexx worship, and their personal experiences of ancestral belief systems passed through the maternal line of their Latvian family.

The three worlds found within Primordia offer an exploration into femme-focussed prehistoric ancestries, and consider how alternative ways of being can allow for the formation of new worlds in collaboration with beyond-human entities. Throughout the gallery installation, you’ll find elements of these digital worlds such as ceramic sigils and fluid textile works, an artform practised throughout generations of Laīna’s family.

Play Primordia (2022) online here and explore the installation from 10 June – 27 August.

John Moores Painting Prize 2023

The UK’s longest-running painting competition returns to Walker Art Gallery in September 2023.

Bringing together the best of contemporary painting from across the UK to Liverpool, the painting prize is over 60 years old. First held in 1957, the competition was named after its founding sponsor Sir John Moores. The prize is open to all artists working with paint, who are aged 18 years or over and live or are professionally based in the UK. Showcasing the very latest in painting today across the UK, the competition culminates in an exhibition held at the Walker Art Gallery every two years.

Past prize winners have included Peter Doig, Rose Wylie, David Hockney and Sir Peter Blake, who became the first patron of the John Moores Painting Prize in 2011, after winning the Junior section of John Moores 3 with his painting ‘Self Portrait with Badges’ in 1961.

This year’s jurors are Alexis Harding, Chila Kumari Singh Burman MBE, Marlene Smith, The White Pube and Yu Hong. Tickets available online, with half price tickets for Liverpool City Region residents on the first Sunday of every month.

Rob Davies

Rob Davies is a Wirral-based artist who paints large-scale watercolour landscapes. His initial inspiration is the notion of a romantic “sublime”.

Davies’s artworks are eclectic, but mainly combine elements from semi-industrial and semi-wild environments into landscapes that hover somewhere between real locations and science fiction. The paintings, using a variety of media from watercolour to oils, depict these quasi-imaginary landscapes with a mix of realism and gestural mark making.

One of Davies’ interests is in the mind’s tendency to wander, its desire to be elsewhere. We often try to romanticise what we are seeing, or to project our thoughts onto what could be called ‘mundane’ environments. Locations such as train tracks or embankments become translated in these works as fitting starting points for exploring such inclinations.

Liverpool Art Fair 2023

This summer will see the much-anticipated return of Liverpool Art Fair, with the highly successful event taking place at the iconic Royal Liver Building for the first time.

The event, which is free to attend, will be open to the public from 30th June to 20th August, Tuesday – Sunday, 12-6pm. Visitors will be able to view an amazing array of paintings, sculptures and prints by 175 local artists. Art prices start at £20, there is a large “under £200” section and everything is under £2000, ensuring there is something for every pocket!

Liverpool Art Fair is an annual event, aiming to showcase a wide range of affordable original art by a plethora of local artists; providing a unique insight into the region’s creative talent and the opportunity for everyone, from seasoned collector to first time art buyer, to own their own piece of the Liverpool art world.

Pre-pandemic the event ran for eight years, launching in May 2012 as part of the inaugural Liverpool Art Month, at the then brand new Camp and Furnace. In 2017, it relocated to the Pier Head, in a purpose-built gallery constructed from five shipping containers. In 2019 it moved to Metquarter, where it ran for 80 consecutive days. In total the event has welcomed over 50,000 art lovers and showcased work by more than 1700 artists.

Panellists were selected from an open call, with anyone based within a 35 mile radius eligible to apply. A selection panel, made up of; Sarah Lovell, Lead Officer for Culture at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Faith Bebbington, sculptor, Patrick Kirk-Smith, editor and director of ArtinLiverpool, and Angela Samata, arts professional and broadcaster, had the unenviable task of whittling down the almost 300 artists who applied.

During the seven weeks of the fair, a packed events programme will take place including Saturday creative workshops with our partners Cass Art, Beginners Guides to Buying Art drop-in sessions, and a programme of events designed to support artists and creatives to start and grow their own businesses, in partnership with the BIPC (Business and Intellectual Property Centre). All events will be free; keep checking their website liverpoolartfair.com and socials for more details and booking information.

The Liverpool Art Fair People’s Choice Award will also be returning, with visitors able to vote for their favourite artist up to the beginning of August. The lucky winner will receive a host of prizes, including an exhibition at the Cass Art Liverpool store and their art work displayed on Open Media’s advertising screens across the city! As our Media Partner, Open Media will also be helping us to spread the word about the event throughout the summer.

Liverpool Art Fair is also sponsored by CBRE, who manage the Royal Liver Building, and Evelyn Partners; we are incredibly grateful for their generous support.

Lucy Byrne, Managing Director of organisers dot-art said:

“We are over the moon to be bringing Liverpool Art Fair back after a pandemic enforced 4 year break, and to be in the city’s most iconic building is the icing on the cake! The response from the creative community has been incredibly positive (we are showcasing more artists than ever before) and we cannot wait to share their amazing artwork with locals and tourists alike this summer.”

Kaleidoscopic

Showcasing a selection of paintings at Art In The Everyman.

Daniel’s paintings are exceptionally multi-coloured, overjoyed, and stimulating – waking us from our unaware slumber. Not only are his paintings fused with academic fundamentals of art, like form, colour, and texture, but also screech the maximalist style in a fashionable sensibility.

Event

“There is no dearth of concepts, meaningful identities, and multifarious objects. Instead, each painting is a disclosure of a new tale and experiences.”
