Painting Our Planet with dot-art

This workshop’s aim is for each student to create a piece of art on the theme of “Earth as a Hidden Jewel in Space”. What, to you, is the most valuable or precious thing about our planet?

This workshop will be led by Madeleine Pires, a professional artist and teacher who paints nebulas and the natural world. Also with them will be Helen Jermak, Project Scientist at the Astrophysics Research Institute at LJMU.

Helen will talk about her work with the Liverpool Telescope and bring insights from a scientific angle, where Madeleine will bring conceptual and practical points about how to visually express this theme in a creative way, with examples and demonstration.

Be ready to be inspired, and to bring your own unique contribution to share.

Ali Hunter – Solo Show

Ali Hunter is an artist/illustrator, currently living in Liverpool, UK.

She draws and paints what visually inspires her. Ali’s current inspiration is drawn from home interiors and decor, and the bulk of her recent work has been focussed on painting rooms in people’s homes.

She is also working on a series of female portrait paintings, which combine fashion, pets and interiors. Ali likes to recreate an image that offers plenty of intricate details.

She’s found the wider community of female artists very supportive. The female artist pool is very diverse and vibrant, both locally and online.

Being a neuroatypical female artist, Ali found it challenging to self-publicise at first. Artists are expected to put themselves out there and approach people confidently, which is something she found difficult. However, she’s now starting to find her place and feel more at home within the female art world.

Introduction to Terrazzo: Make Your Ow...

Love terrazzo? Learn the technique whilst making your own coaster set!

During this session, you will learn how to make a pair of round terrazzo-pattern coasters using an eco resin material, Jesmonite.

In recent years, Jesmonite has become the go-to material for designers and artists looking for an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional resin based products. Originally used in the building industry, Jesmonite is an acrylic-modified gypsum (plaster) composite that offers an eco-friendly and safe alternative to fibreglass, and provides a lightweight substitute to concrete.

The workshop will last approximately 3.5 hours, during which you will create your own personalised terrazzo coasters.

Aurelie, their resident terrazzo extraordinaire and founder of Aura Living Homeware will show you how to use this “new” material as well as achieving any colour chips and/or base you wish to make your coasters with.

The session will be broken down in 3 parts with a 30 minutes break in between each, which will allow your creations to dry as well as provide us with the opportunity for a short natter over a coffee.

Aurelie will teach you all there is to know about eco resin material, its different applications, and show you some other homeware accessory examples we have been making using this great material.

A little more about Aurelie…

“With a working background as an interior designer, I began my journey with ceramics about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, during the first lockdown, I was no longer able to access the pottery studio which made me research other crafts and activities I could practice from home. This is when I discovered the world of Jesmonite and its endless possibilities.

This is when I purchased a DIY kit to try it for myself and I feel in love with the process, the ease of use and little requirement for specialised equipment or space. As a designer, my imagination exploded with the prospect of all the ideas I could materialise using this material. I am now so excited to be sharing my knowledge of this product for you to discover and try out a new craft skill.”

A note about the class:-

The class may not be suitable for people who have any wrist problems as there is quite a lot of sanding involved in the process.

Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit of water splashed. The paint used will wash off, but avoid wearing your best clothes!

Easter Printing

Make your own Easter prints and cards to take home with you (and give to your loved ones).

Colourful Stories: A Queer Retelling o...

Colourful Stories: A Queer Retelling of Liverpool’s History, an exhibition organised by Comics Youth, open for one day only!

Queer culture has been erased from the history books for centuries, leaving so many with little knowledge of their heritage and identity. The very little information available often only covers major cities like London, Manchester, and Brighton.

Similarly, those depicting Liverpool’s history often look to a traditional and heteronormative route, completely omitting a single thought to Liverpool’s vibrant and diverse queer scene. At Colourful Stories they aim to explore the unique history and wide range of experiences that come with being a queer individual in Liverpool.

Comics Youth was founded in 2015 and is a creative community organisation led by young people, for young people. Their aim is to empower youth across the Liverpool City Region to flourish from the margins of society: Harnessing their own narratives, finding confidence within an inclusive community, and developing the resilience to succeed on their own path.

The show will be open from 12 – 5pm, 31 March, followed by a celebration event, from 6 – 8pm.
