A great way to hone your woodworking skills, or to learn a new skill from scratch, this four hour hands-on class will take you through the different skills and techniques needed to create your own toolbox!

Using recycled and reclaimed wood, woodwork tutor Olive will walk you through the steps to crafting your very own toolbox.

During the class you’ll learn how to measure and cut wood accurately and safely; as well as sanding, plaining, drilling and sawing.

You will use:

– Chop/ Mitre saw – to cut wood at various angles

– Band saw – to rip through timber

– Jigsaw – to create free form cuts

– Drill driver – for pilot holes & fixing screws

– Pillar drill – to bore vertical holes

– Disc / Belt sander – for accurate, powerful sanding

– Palm sander – for versatile sanding

Join their class and build your confidence using a range of woodworking tools and techniques, while making your very own toolbox / planter / storage box of your choice!

All tools, equipment and materials will be provided on the day.

Please arrive 15 mins before the class begins. There will also be a short break during the session.

About the teacher:

Olive transitioned into carpentry after years of hands-on creative pursuits. She’s excelled at top creative organisations in Liverpool like Fact, Bluecoat, Lipa, and the Tate. Originally a Creative Arts graduate, she pursued her true passion, carpentry. For the past 7 years, she’s been a carpenter and gallery technician, specialising in set construction.

Do I need any experience prior to the class?

No prior wood working experience is necessary, all health and safety will be taught by our experienced technician.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements for this class?

The class is for people ages 16+.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

On street parking is free but limited to 2 hours so vehicle drivers will need a permit for street parking. Alternatively you can park in our visitor car park. Please let us know if you require a blue badge holder and we can reserve your space. Public transport links are nearby, and the venue is easily accessible on foot from Liverpool City Centre (see our website for more information, we’re located at Make North Docks).

How accessible is the venue?

The workshop is located on the ground floor which provides full accessibility to the premises including toilet provisions. We would advise wheelchair users to contact the workshop provider on the sale of the ticket to arrange a parking bay.

What can I bring into the event?

There will be a short break during the session with the opportunity for snacks and coffee! Please bring along lunch/snacks if you would prefer not to buy it. All materials will be provided for the class.

What should I wear?

Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required. Long hair must be tied back and jewellery and any loose items such as scarves will need to be removed or tucked away prior to the class starting. These rules are for your safety and must be followed. It also tends to run a bit chilly in the workshop, as it is in a warehouse, so dress in layers and wear thick-soled shoes.

Can I get a refund for my ticket?

Refunds are available up to 7 days before the event.

Refunds will be offered in the event of the event being cancelled, alternative dates will be offered if appropriate.

If for any reason you find you are unable to attend then please get in touch and a refund can be offered up to 7 days before the workshop. After this date they can only offer a refund if your space is able to be filled.

Chris has been doing DIY since he was 16 years old and has worked professionally in carpentry and woodworking for over 25 years. He has a wealth of experience in TV set building and exhibition and installation building in museums. Chris teaches our beginner woodworking classes, whilst developing his own professional skills in upholstery and furniture making. Chris is also a portrait artist.

Festive Wreath-Making with Gemma Longw...

Get into the festive spirit and join in for a hands-on wreath making workshop where you’ll learn to create your own bespoke wreath using fresh foliage.

This workshop, led by Gemma Longworth (from Channel 4’s ‘Find It, Fix It, Flog It’) , is perfect for both beginners and seasoned crafters.

All materials are included but we suggest bringing sentimental items or additional decorations to make your wreath unique.

Festive Print Workshop

Join the Bluecoat for a festive print making session this December. Print your very own Christmas cards, wrapping paper and decorations using linocut, whilst getting into the spirit of the season with festive tunes and a complimentary tea and mince pie.

Sat 02 Dec, 11am – 5pm

During the session you’ll be able to learn, socialise and let your creativity flow in the relaxing setting of Bluecoat’s Garden Room as you create a pack of hand-printed Christmas cards, wrapping paper and a wooden bauble decoration to take home with you. You can even continue to print at home by taking your hand carved lino block with you after the session.

Your session will be led by a local artist and printmaker. You’ll learn the basics of linocut, how to create and register a multiple colour design and how to print your design using a traditional barren or on their A3 Tofko tabletop relief press. You’ll then be given ample time to print your designs and experiment.

Useful Information

All materials are provided on the day and included in the price of your ticket.
Feel free bring a simple image or drawing with you on the day as a source of inspiration to create your design from.
Lunch is not provided in the cost of your ticket, however there will be a lunch break during the course and the Bluecoat Cafe will be open for food and refreshments.

Family Festive Print Party

Get creative this festive season in this family friendly printmaking session.

Sat 25 Nov, 11am – 1pm & 2pm – 4pm

Use print foam to design, sculpt and print your own pack of Christmas cards and artworks, and create beautiful monoprinted decorations for your tree.

Children will be able carve the print foam themselves, or a parent/guardian can help. There will be ample time during the session for children to print their cards, decorations and get creative.

There will be activity packs available for £1.50 extra and the opportunity to leave the workshop to grab drinks and snacks.

Join artists from Blue Room to celebrate the launch of their new knot wrap commission with ethical cosmetics company, Lush.

This event takes place at Lush Liverpool, 38 – 46 Church St, Liverpool, L1 3AW.

Artists from Blue Room, Bluecoat’s inclusive arts project invite you to celebrate Party Animals, their exciting new design commission from ethical cosmetics company, LUSH.

The first floor of the LUSH Liverpool store will be transformed into a winter wonderland as Blue Room artists bring elements of the Party Animals design to life with artworks and interactive installations. Step inside Blue Room’s imagined ‘menagerie at the North Pole’ to find tigers in pixie boots, penguins on bicycles… and a partridge in a pear tree.

There will be a chance to meet the artists behind the design and join in with printmaking activities in a drop-in creative workshop. You will also have the opportunity to find the perfect ethical festive gift with a pop-up print shop selling a brand new collection of limited edition art prints created by Blue Room artists in the Bluecoat Print Studio.
