Mark Thomas: Black and White

Expect creative fun from one of our oldest surviving alternative comics.

Taking down politicians. Mucking about. New ideas and finding HOPE. This award-winning comedian (is there any other type?) asks how did we get here? What are we going to do about it? Who’s up for a sing song?

After lockdowns and isolation this show is about the simple act of being in a room together and toppling international capitalism.

Rob Newman

Writing on the Wall are delighted to host Rob Newman’s Philosophy Show, as part of their 2022 festival.

Rob Newman’s Philosophy Show sees the multi award-winning comedian weave together Nietzsche’s sunglasses, Showaddywaddy, Julius Caesar’s low traffic neighbourhoods, electric spiders and singing Neanderthals into a hilarious tour-de-force that offers hope for a changing world.

This new live show is a companion to Rob’s BBC Radio 4 show, Half Full Philosophy Hour. His previous series, The Entirely Accurate Encyclopaedia of Evolution and Total Eclipse of Descartes won the BBC Audio Drama Awards for ‘Best Comedy’.

Rob has been writing and performing comedy for radio, television and stage since the late eighties, and has also written four novels and two non-fiction books.

Pauline Daniels – Get Me Before ...

Pauline Daniels returns to the stage in 2022 with her hotly anticipated stand up comedy tour.

Described as a ‘joyous performer’ by Sir Ken Dodd OBE, she continues to be one of Britain’s hardest working stand up comedienne’s of our generation. With her unique brand of humour and breathtaking vocals, she’s coming to a venue near you for an evening guaranteed to have you rolling in the aisles with laughter!

AS SEEN AND HEARD ON – Calendar Girls The Musical by Gary Barlow & Tim Firth, The Comedians, Shirley Valentine, Bread, Brookside, The Street, Central TV, Saturday Royal, Wogan, Radio Merseyside, Liverpool Live and Ricky Tomlinson’s Laughter Show.

Daniel Kitson

Daniel hasn’t been on stage for over two years.

And, to be entirely honest, he’s not really missed it.

It is, however, his actual job and everyone’s gone back to work now. So, he’s picked out a comfy pen, bought a new notebook and booked himself a summers worth of outdoor shows to find out whether he can still do his job, and what, if anything, he has to say to large groups of people he doesn’t know.

Please note: What with the two year gap and the lack of practice, this entire tour will be, to a greater or lesser extent, work in progress and the shows are likely to be relatively rickety affairs. But on the up side, they will sometimes feature support and/or collaboration from Gavin Osborn (when his schedule allows) and Daniel’s already written the question “Do worms feel fear?” in his new notebook, so we should be okay.

Also, if it gets boring – you can just use the time to look at the sky and feel small.

An Evening With Nana Funk at Little Li...

The time has come for Nana to get intimate. She’s sick of the stadium life and is now touring to smaller scale venues so she can get up close and personal with her army of fans.

She’s got a bee in her bonnet and wants you to get on it. This is no teatime with your granny, this is An Evening With Nana Funk.

Get taken on a hilarious and emotional musical rollercoaster as Nana challenges ageism and how aged/aging people are portrayed in society.

From delicate ballads to 90’s dance and all the way through to full on ROCK, Nana gives her not so subtle opinions on what it means to be “age appropriate”

“Proper fun with a serious message – An Evening With Nana Funk will lift your spirits”

Les Dawson: Flying High

Jon Culshaw (Dead Ringers, The Impressions Show) stars in this funny, affectionate and poignant celebration of the much-missed comedy legend.

Join Les as he summons forth a wealth of characters and incidents from his eventful life and career, as he travels on Concorde at twice the speed of sound 68,000 feet above the Earth.

A new play from BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning writer Tim Whitnall and director Bob Golding.

Mark Thomas – Hit Refresh: 50 ...

Mark Thomas has a spring run of his latest show Hit Refresh: 50 Things About Us. Combining his trademark mix of storytelling, stand-up, mischief and really, really well researched material, Mark examines how we have come to inhabit this divided wasteland that some of us call the United Kingdom.

Delighted to be back on the road once again, Mark picks through the myths, facts and figures of our national identities to ask how we have so much feeling for such a hollow land. Who do we think we are? It is a show about money, history, songs, gongs, wigs, unicorns, guns, bungs, sods of soil and rich people* in the vein of The Manifesto-meets-sweary history channel.

An unstoppable force both on and off-stage, Mark has stopped arms deals, created a manifesto and brought the winning policy to parliament, walked the entire length of the Israeli wall in the West Bank, set up a comedy club in Jenin, had six series on Channel 4 alongside several television documentaries and radio series, written some books, grabbed a Guinness World Record, toured sell-out tours, won numerous awards, nabbed himself a Medal of Honour and succeeded in changing some laws along the way.

50 Things About Us is also a podcast, and was published as a book last year by September Publishing.

Kiri Pritchard-McLean: Home Truths

Kiri Pritchard-McLean (Have I Got News For You?, Live at the Apollo) is back with a brand new tour.

It’s been a big few years for most of us and Kiri is no different. She’s moved back to her home island of Anglesey, struggled with lockdown and got herself some rescue chickens.

You can expect jokes about skinny jeans, learning Welsh and white supremacy – something for everyone.

One Man, Two Guvnors

The smash hit comedy explodes into Liverpool.

It’s 1963 and Francis Henshall has just been fired from his skiffle band. In search of food and romance, he soon finds himself juggling not one but two new jobs.

What Francis doesn’t know is that his first guvnor, small time crook Roscoe Crabbe, is actually Roscoe’s twin sister Rachel, in disguise as her dead brother, who was killed by her boyfriend, Stanley Stubbers. To complicate matters further, Francis’ second boss is none other than Stanley Stubbers, on the run and desperate to be reunited with Rachel.

All Francis needs to do is keep his two guvnors apart. What follows is a hilarious mix of slapstick, farce and live music. This side-splittingly funny, brand new production is not to be missed.

There are additional matinee shows, check here for full listings.
