FACT – 20th Birthday Celebration...

Join FACT on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October 2023 to celebrate their 20th Birthday! Back in 2003, FACT was Liverpool’s first purpose-built arts centre for more than 60 years.

It was a landmark moment for the city and the UK, giving moving image and digital art a place to expand, experiment and be embraced by visitors from all over the world.

To celebrate, they have lots of free events and activities lined-up, open to everyone and suitable for all ages. Highlights include hearing from some of the most influential voices in art, a behind-the-scenes tour of the largest sculpture they’ve ever exhibited, watching a film from the inside of a limousine and dancing the night away at their official after party.

Grab your free tickets to the official after party at District in the Baltic Triangle (61 Jordan St, Liverpool L1 0BE) to dance the night away. They’ll have PLUSH and Social Hours providing the party soundtrack with cabaret performances from EAT ME + PREACH and a special headline DJ set from artist Jenkin van Zyl.

Whilst most of the events are drop-in, a few do have limited spaces so book your free tickets in advance.

Black History Month 23: The Situations...

Join them for a captivating evening as they celebrate Taylor-Dior Rumble’s debut novel, The Situationship. Get ready for a story of love, self-discovery, and unexpected connections.

In The Situationship, Tia, an independent woman, faces a crossroads when her ex arrives with a new partner. She ventures into the world of dating apps and finds an exhilarating connection with Nate, a talented photographer.

During this exclusive event, Taylor-Dior Rumble will discuss her novel’s inspirations, character development, and modern romance. Join us to explore the complexities of relationships in the digital age, from friendship to love and “situationships”.

Taylor-Dior Rumble is a writer, born and raised in south-east London. She started her journalism career at BBC News at the age of 18 and has since gone on to produce and cover stories ranging from the politics of Black hair to colourism in Hollywood. The Situationship is her first novel.

Taylor’s debut novel has drawn comparisons to works by other talented authors such as Tia Williams and Candice Carty-Williams, as well as the popular HBO show “Insecure” created by Issa Rae. This suggests that The Situationship is poised to become a beloved addition to the contemporary romance genre.

Event

The Situationship is published by #Merky Books which is an award-winning imprint launched in 2018 by Stormzy and Penguin Random House UK with a clear ambition to publish books that will own – and change – the mainstream. Our aim is to publish the stories that will allow a new generation of writers and readers across the UK to see themselves represented more regularly within the pages of a book.

Black History Month 23: Leroy Through ...

Creative Writing Sessions with Levi Tafari.

Leroy Cooper’s photography exhibition, Liverpool Through the Lens, currently on display in The Museum of Liverpool, is a love letter to the city and an evocative and insightful depiction of life in the Liverpool 8 community.

In July 1981, just 20 years old, Leroy was arrested in Liverpool 8. The incident provided a spark to the growing discontent at police discrimination and violence against the black community in the area, which led to the first Toxteth uprising. Following his arrest, Leroy pursued a career in photography to counteract the negative depictions of Toxteth and the L8 community after 1981, amassing a collection of over a quarter of a million images that documented Liverpool’s people and culture. Beyond photography, he was a talented performance poet, DJ on Toxteth Community Radio, and a graffiti artist, known for repainting Toxteth street name signs in the vibrant colours of Rastafari. Cooper’s creative spirit remained undeterred, inspiring us all.

Amidst all the trials and tribulations of the Liverpool 8 community, Leroy’s lens always focused on the people and the community, revealing their strengths and vulnerabilities, through both happy and sadder times. Leroy was a guest of Writing on the Wall’s festival many, many times. We were proud to be invited to the opening of this exhibition in early 2023. In tribute to Leroy’s life and 40-year career WoW and NML are launching ‘Leroy Through the Lens’, a project that turns the focus on Leroy and his work, through a range of monthly workshops inviting participants to respond to Leroy’s powerful photography through a creative writing. The first session will be led by Leroy’s cousin and internationally renowned dub poet and performer, Levi Tafari.

Event

We are proud to present this co-hosted event with National Museums Liverpool, as part of our Black History Month programme. This is the first of a series of four workshops. Participants are welcome to come to this as a stand alone event or book for all four.

Murder Mystery – Killer Christma...

DBY Interactive present the ultimate murder mystery themed night. Join them Downstairs at the Everyman for a festive celebration like no other…

1958, Christmas in Hollywood California and the stars are out in force on the red carpet – putting on a musical extravaganza to raise money for the homeless who will be spending the festive season with nothing but the sidewalk for company.

The biggest draw is The legendary Capeoli – fresh from a sell out tour and box-office busting movie run – they have Hollywood – heck, the WORLD – in the palm of their hand.  Their charm and good grace is legendary, but it seems that there’s more to the Italian born rat-packer than meets the eye.  The evening may be about charity and good will to all men, but there’s a stink about the place that smells like… MURDER!

An evening of intrigue, live music and murder – grab onto your hats – it’s gonna be Killer or a party out there.

Theme: Rat Pack inspired, Hollywood 1950s, live singing, crime thriller.

Included in your ticket price is a welcome drink and pie and mash.

Choose from either Scouse and Red Cabbage Pie (GF) or Blind Scouse and Cabbage Pie (VG) (GF), both served with creamy mashed potato, tender stem broccoli and loads of gravy.

All dietary and allergen needs can be catered for. Please indicate when prompted during your booking journey if you have any allergies or dietary requirements.

Storm in a Teacup

Storm in a Teacup is a life affirming musical comedy from the creative team that brought you ‘On Cloud 79’ – an authentic play about living well with dementia (2017-2018), ‘Silver Bells and Cocktails’ – an amusing yet truthful look at life during lockdown’ (2021) and ‘Shaken Rattled and Rolled’ (2022).

Join them and the O’Brien family as we take a nostalgic look at life, love and music in the 70s.

All families are strange! The O’Brien siblings haven’t spoken in years. But when big sis, Angie dies, Tony & Bev have to sort through the family stuff. Remembering the 70’s when they were close brings Angie back. With the help of Morecambe and Wise, Sandy Shaw, Bowie, and David Soul, tears turn to laughter…and Pan’s People dancing. Can looking back help us to heal and go forward?  Or are we destined to repeat old, family habits?

Inspired by stories of families within our community ‘Storm In a Teacup’ looks at the petty squabbles that cause major problems. Grudges can go on and on.  Angie O’Brien never forgave little sister Bev for not admiring her new kitchen in 2013. Bev hasn’t spoken to brother Tony since he got drunk at her daughter’s wedding. And Tony has been miffed at the pair of them for as long as he can remember. No-one knows why. What happens if it’s too late to make-up?
