Liverpool Biennial Listening Session

Join FACT for an evening of music and conversation centred around Belinda Kazeem-Kaminski’s Liverpool Biennial commission.

This event is inspired by the soundscape that Belinda Kazeem-Kaminski and Bassano Bonelli Bassano created in collaboration with participants from Liverpool who all work with their breath. The group includes actors, singers, teachers, activists, and therapists, amongst others.

The soundscape in the gallery is a 16-minute-long piece titled Keep On Keepin’ On (2022), which references Curtis Mayfield’s 1979 song ‘Keep on Keeping On’. Presented alongside two video works, the installation references the precarity of Black breathing and proposes breath as a means of individual and collective liberation.

For this event, Belinda invites some of the film’s participants to choose their own songs, bringing them to the audience for a collective listening session, as well as a conversation about the work and their involvement. This event is moderated by award winning composer, vocal coach and singer/songwriter, Jennifer John.

Queer 4 You

The day is a youth-led and co-produced event that aims to promote values surrounding connection, hope, and mental health. In such an uncertain time, with hatred and bigotry becoming so rampant, their young people wanted to create a space where LGBTQIA+ people and marginalised people could feel safe, seen, and heard.

There will be workshops, ran by creative young people, taking place throughout the day in the Mann Island Atrium. You can choose between a writing workshop, two art workshops, and a yoga workshop!

Within the RIBA building, there will be a young person-led exhibition which focuses on themes of hope and connection, and a quiet sensory space available to all who wish to use it. A book swap within the RIBA building will also be available for anyone interested!

Mark Thomas in England & Son

Set when The Great Devouring comes home, England & Son is a one-man play written specifically for the award-winning political comedian Mark Thomas by award-winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack, Paines Plough’s Roundabout, Soho and UK tour).

This is the first play Mark has ever performed in that he has not written himself.

With some deep, dark laughs-and some deep, dark love-along the way, England & Son emerges from characters Mark knew in his childhood and Ed’s lived experience in jail.

Prepare for Mark to take you on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, empire, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.

Revival

Revival showcases Black/minoritorised women; sharing their stories: overcoming challenges, campaigning for change, breathing new life into themselves and their communities.

The project will empower women, supporting them to see themselves as survivors and change makers via community workshops, whilst developing their writing skills.

The project will culminate with a performance at Unity to an audience of family, friends and community leaders; this will take place in Black History Month and will be part of Liverpool’s calendar of events celebrating and honouring the contributions of Black and Minoritorised women across the city, engaging participants in the communal act of Revival.
