State of Mind Symposium

This November, 20 Stories High will be hosting a special event at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.

Over the past 4 years we have been funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to explore how, as an arts organisation, we place mental health and wellbeing at the heart of the company – what it means for the young people we work with, the professional artists we co-create with, the audiences that see the work and also the team that makes it all happen.

The day will consist of performances, presentations, panel discussions and workshops, led by young people, artist wellbeing practitioners, staff, and the artists who make the work. In the evening there will also be a chance to see a brand new show that has the State of Mind values and processes embedded in the work.

Whether you are a freelance theatre maker, an arts organisation, or a company that values wellbeing –  this is a space to learn more about what we have been doing, as well as share your own practice and explore new ideas.

We are so looking forward to creating a space to explore wellbeing with our sector, and we really hope you can join us. So if this is of interest to you – please do put the date in your diary, and we will be in touch soon with more information about what to expect and how to book on!

There will be BSL interpretation at the event, if you have any other access requirements please contact: amy@20storieshigh.org.uk

There will also be an online option available for people who need to attend the event remotely.

The event is free for freelancers. There will be a tiered-ticketing system for organisations.

The Liver Bird

What if the Liver Bird really did exist?

Shakespeare North Playhouse’s Sir Ken Dodd Performance Garden will come alive with The Liver Birds, an enchanting outdoor family show.

Charlie J has heard all about Liverpool’s famous Liver Birds from his Grandma Bailey’s stories. He is fascinated by them. And just when things start to get difficult at school, and just when he needs it most, Charlie J is visited by a very special creature…

Dive into this glorious, modern-day fairy tale, shared with the magic of puppets and storytelling. And keep your eyes to the skies!

The play opened in 2021 at Incredible Edible, Court Hey Park in the Summer and was the first theatrical play to visit Walton Hall Park in over forty years. The piece was performed throughout the Liverpool City Region, including Norris Green Park, Springfield Park and Devonfield Gardens.

The Bird even flew indoors to land on stage at Liverpool Central Library as part of the Liverpool Year of Writing, Writers Bootcamp and Marketplace in September 2021 that saw 922 creatives and the public come together for a celebration of workshops and literary activities.

They are delighted that this production will be the first to play in the Sir Ken Dodd Performance Gardens at Shakespeare North Playhouse.

Tale created by John Maguire
Adapted for stage by Jessica May Buxton, The Bookworm Players.
Directed by Margaret Connell

The Sounds Agents: Then Along Came Len...

Peep Show – Battle Royale, Cyber...

Teatro Pomodoro unveils a streamed version of the world premiere of Peep Show-Battle Royale

Following previous shows, Siren, Men and Crabs, and Cabaret From The Shadows, Teatro Pomodoro have turned to creating a brand new, off the walls, satirical production that utilizes their trademark blend of anarchic clowning.

The team have created a set that is reminiscent of the peep shows of Amsterdam which creates an immersive quality that enhances the theatrical experience and strangely, translates perfectly to online viewing.

Now, with the collaboration of Melodic Distraction, Peep Show – Battle Royale is ready to be shown globally with an exclusive streamed cyber-showing!

Peep Show – Battle Royale is a darkly comedic, interactive theatrical experience, where the live audience enter a set inspired by the Amsterdam Peep Shows and look through their windows into a new world. A world where the lines between news and entertainment no longer exist and a faceless elite hide behind gruesome, voyeuristic game shows as they manipulate all media, society, and politics.

Battle Royale, a reality T.V show where regular people -turned-gladiators destroy each other on an international stage, their fates lie with the live audience, whose votes can influence the outcome of the game. Think The Muppets meets Gladiator.

Teatro Pomodoro is a multicultural theatre company based in Liverpool who create unique physical theatre and comedy that stems from the diversity of their ensemble: Carmen Arquelladas (Spain), Duncan Cameron (Canada), Miwa Nagai (Japan), Simone Tani (Italy) and their very own Scouser, Leebo Luby.

“One of the most innovative, international physical theatre companies currently working in the North West.” Francesca Peschier, New Works Associate, Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatre

Keynote Lecture by Malik Al Nasir

The Liverpool-based historian, poet and author of Letters to Gil (2021) Malik Al Nasir provides this keynote talk at the Bluecoat.

Where the Arts Belong: In Conversation

Join Bluecoat for an insight into working creatively with people on a dementia journey. Part of Bluecoat’s project Where the Arts Belong.

Free, booking required.

Leading visual artists, writers, storytellers, dancers, musicians and composers have worked creatively with people living with dementia on a wide range of artistic activities.

While experienced at working with others, this was the first time each artist had worked in a dementia setting. They have been on this mutually supportive journey with Bluecoat’s Participation team, led by artist and facilitator Tabitha Moses who will jointly facilitate this discussion with Bluecoat’s Head of Programme, Marie-Anne McQuay.

Hear from Francisco Carrasco, Gav Cross, Alan Dunn, Roger Hill, Brigitte Jurack, Mary Prestidge, Jonathan Raisin.

Starting in 2019 and continuing into 2022, the artists have navigated the emergence of Covid 19, while remaining dedicated to working with the residents, staff and families of North West Belong Villages. An additional sister strand We Belong Together was also developed to help tackle the isolation brought on by lockdowns for older people.

Park Life

When can writing a play be like a walk in the park?

When you are a member of a Make it Write’s Tag team writer’s workshop giving us an uplifting look at a park through its seasons and the people who frequent it.

In their latest project the Liverpool-based group brought together nine writers from the North West to take a sideways look at life, love, loss and longing. Each writer, writing a section of the play before passing it onto the next, then finished off and made whole by David Haworth.

And the delightful result of this collaboration can be seen at The Casa Theatre Bar, Hope Street, Liverpool on May 27 and 28.

As well as the plants growing in all their glory, we see the vandals who have blossomed into responsible parents and the park keeper on his day of retirement.

The old park bench has witnessed the many possibilities we have to connect with strangers that can lead to new friendships and revisit old romances. It has seen hopes kindled and dreams fostered.

Elaine Louise Stewart takes the reigns as both writers’ mentor and assistant director’s mentor. The assistant director is Dylan Russell. Dylan says that she is honoured to have been chosen for this project. Working with Elaine is incredible and we have found a brilliant cast to bring this to life. As the youngest person on the project, I think I bring a relevance to how society is now. The show is produced by Sharon Colpman.
