What is a Scratch NIght?

A scratch night is a sharing platform designed to give artists the opportunity to share their work which is in the very early stages of development with a live audience.

For Artists, this is a unique opportunity to receive immediate feedback and make appropriate changes or developments to their work for the future.

For audience members,  attending a scratch performance provides the opportunity to contribute to the development of a new piece whilst supporting new artists & their emerging work.

Peña with Flamenco Dancer Andrés Pe...

Andrés Peña – flamenco dancer, musician and choreographer – brings strength, beauty, energy and elegance to his highly personal show, showcasing the very best of flamenco tradition.

Andrés, an accomplished and respected flamenco artist from Jerez, is performing in Liverpool for one night only in the intimate venue of the Capstone Theatre, well-known for its support of world music events of the highest quality.

Andrés is an artist and dancer ‘who never disappoints’ (deFlamenco.com), with his mastery of improvisation, instinctive rhythm and connection with his musicians, transmitting wave upon wave of emotion as he lifts the audience to the heights of this incredible art form. Often serious, intense and focused, his exceptional interpretation of flamenco songs develops into virtuosic rhythm and exuberant celebration of the music that he loves.

Andrés is accompanied by highly acclaimed musicians, Miguel Rosendo, cantaor (flamenco singer) from Cadiz and Miguel Perez, guitarist from Seville.  All three have grown up with flamenco, their deep love of this music developing into highly successful careers as performers and teachers.  As a team they have enjoyed presenting shows together for many years, in between international festivals, tours and engagements as guest artists.

Barely Visible at The Arts Centre, Edg...

Barely Visible, directed by Elinor Randle and performed by Rowena Gander, is an empowering physical solo performance that explores sexualisation, (fe)male gaze and what it really feels like to live in the shadows.

The piece incorporates the use of a 100-kilo vertical pole, of which dance theatre artist Rowena examines control and visibility in what’s been described as a ‘moving and powerful’ semi-auto biographical performance.

Rowena will perform at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool on Saturday 19th February 2022 as part of the venue’s ‘Open Call Programme’ – which saw the piece selected as part of a competitive call for new work – before taking the show to The Arts Centre at Edge Hill University on Tuesday 15th March.

A full tour is set to be confirmed very soon, funded by Arts Council England

ENEA: Flamenco Direct from Andalucía ...

An evening of pure flamenco with national prize-winning young artists from Spain.

The event is held Capstone Theatre, Friday 15th October 2021, 7.30pm.

Dancer and artistic director Julio Ruiz presents this flamenco dance recital, rooted in tradition but expressed by a new generation.  This show brings energy and passion, great depth of feeling, musicianship and elegance, with a touch of humour.

Julio brings two other outstanding young musicians – singer Cristo Heredia and guitarist David Caro. Already respected performers and teachers in their own right, they have grown up together in the flamenco community in Almeria. Now mostly based in Madrid, Almeria and Sevilla respectively, they perform together regularly between tours and other engagements.

Espíritu Flamenco are proud to sponsor and host this visit by Julio Ruiz, which is part of a wider programme of flamenco shows and workshops over the weekend, in Manchester and Liverpool.
