Jazz Sabbath

In a tongue-in-cheek show helmed by pianist Adam Wakeman (Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band since 2004), Jazz Sabbath are a jazz trio from the UK that plays (instrumental) jazz interpretations of Black Sabbath songs, exploring the boundaries between jazz and the songs that defined heavy metal, echoing already present jazz riffs and discovering new ones.

Presenting themselves as a jazz trio formed in 1968 and being the original writers of the tracks, later made famous by Black Sabbath, they released their self-titled debut album in 2020. In April 2022 they released Vol.2, which entered the Billboard jazz album chart at #6. Both albums got special Record Store Day Mono editions, which sold out within days.

On the albums, Adam is joined by Ash Soan on drums and Jerry Meehan on bass, plus a list of guest musicians, such as Fraser T. Smith (Sam Smith), Simon McBride (Deep Purple) and Gus G (Firewind, Ozzy Osbourne). However, all go by their 1960s pseudonyms.

Lydia Reece – Album Launch

After releasing her highly anticipated debut album ‘Looking Glass (Live)’, rising star in Liverpool’s Soul, Jazz and R&B scene, Lydia Reece will premiere her album at District on 12th December, alongside her live band, strings, backing-singers and horn section.

In celebration of the release, Lydia Reece is partnering with Parrjazz this December to captivate audiences, taking them through her journey with an album play-through. Cultivating a passionate, free-flowing and evocative tone alongside a powerful stage presence, Reece’s reputation as an exceptional live artist continues to flourish.

Curating a repertoire from both her debut album and other surprises from her locker, audiences can expect a set stuffed full of heartfelt soul, head-bopping groove and dramatic melodies.

Reece’s live album is a 10 track montage spanning the worlds of Nu-soul, R&B and jazz, all of which manifest in her luscious blend of harmonies, melisma and jazz cadence. Directly influenced by songwriters and leading front-women in the industry such as Lauryn Hill, RAYE, Hiatus Kaiyote and Yebba, she draws inspiration from the intricacies of human emotion and personal experience, channelling maximalism and theatrical elements into her writing style.

Arranged by co-writer and pianist Jack Drummond-Joy and recorded live at The Lightning Cave Studio, the album replicates the orchestral, popular-classical editions of her work that were played at her debut stand-alone sellout show at The Tung Auditorium in Liverpool back in February 2024. The nuanced, intricate orchestral arrangements, compelling lyricism and authentic live recording take the listener on a dramatic journey of contrasting and heightened emotions.

Mentalizing Sound and Experimental Pha...

For this SSTRAPP three day weekender, Inigo and Maeve are joined by Seth Ayyaz, who is a sound artist, composer-performer, psychiatrist and transdisciplinary theorist.  This is the first of two workshops surrounding the publication of Ghost Semantics.

The title of the workshop is based on an incredible piece that Seth wrote for the book, which does a deep dive into listening, crossing sound studies, critical theory, psychology, contemporary psychoanalysis, neuroscience, machine learning and experimental sound art.

Seth offers a way of thinking (and composing) listening through his proposal of a biopsychosocial systems approach to the complexities of sound.

In the theory sessions in the morning, led by Seth and Inigo, we’ll present some of the key ideas in Seth’s text, including explanations of what he means by the biopsychosocial condition of listening, mentalizing sound and experimental phantasmogenesis.

They will use their usual diagramming method for discussing and working through the ideas.

In the afternoons Seth and Maeve will lead us on a practical exploration of the sonic possibilities unleashed by these ideas in the presence of an ambisonic mic, participant’s mind-bodies, and a mass of synthesizers, pedals, acoustic instruments, digital sound software, etc.

A possible way into this practice will be offered through Seth Ayyaz’ graphic score Batroun Concrète, which was commissioned for a residency at Batroun Project Space in Lebanon.

The workshops will begin from what Seth calls a ‘not knowing’ stance: listening becomes a tool to engage uncertainty through curiosity, to discover and disclose what objects and sounding mind-bodies are capable of in the real-time presence of one another.

Besides respecting Bidston’s accountability agreement (tldr don’t be a dick) there are no requirements for attending, everyone is welcome, whatever their knowledge, abilities, etc., and theory and practice should be accessible for those with no background in them.

They recommend arriving at Bidston sometime on Thursday so you’re ready to start working on Friday morning, but if you can’t make it then you can still join later.

It is possible to participate with or without accommodation. We will do collective meals together, which is also an optional extra cost. The cost for participating in the workshop are as follows:

Workshop fee: On a sliding scale from £20-£30 per day, or £60-£90 for the total three days.

Accommodation fee: On a sliding scale from £30-£40 per day, or £90-£120 for the total three days. If you’re struggling financially, e.g. on benefits, get in touch and it may be possible to reduce the cost.

Meals fee: £15 per day

If you’d like to join, please get in touch by sending an email to sstrapp@proton.me

Teaching Lineup

Stephen Atemie & Korantema Anyimadu

Stephen is a fresh young talent emerging from the new generation of Lindy Hoppers. In 2017, Stephen travelled to South Africa to spend a month working with the charity Sing Inchanga. There he shared skills with local children & young people across their own dance styles and Lindy Hop. Stephen’s performance/competition credits include 10 Downing Street, Harrods, Savoy Cup (France), ILHC (USA). His latest projects include organising talks, webinars and advocacy for cultural appreciation within the Lindy Hop/AAVJ communities across the world as a board member for Collective Voices For Change (CVFV).

She is passionate about the cultural links between the past and the present, and the stories of the African and Caribbean diaspora. Korantema was the former co-leader of the chorus line troupe, The London Starlings (formerly known as The Dinahs).

Angela Andrew

Angela Andrew is a multi-disciplined artist from London, UK.

Her dance story began with the first generation of hip-hop dancers on the streets of Hackney, where she was born and raised. She began lindy-hopping in 1991. By the time Angela started teaching Lindy-Hop, she was already an established educator working in schools, colleges, other institutions, and festivals.

Angela’s artistic work is varied and trailblazing.   For just over 6 years, Angela was the Artistic Director for Rhythm Tap N’ Swing association based in Lyon, France (where the Lindy Hop started its French journey). Her mission there was to reboot the scene and forge strong links between music organisations and other dance disciplines in Lyon and across France; a goal which she vibrantly achieved.

Maria Mallan & Clàudia Fonte

Swing dancers (Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz), Maria and Clàudia’s work is focused on developing their own context for couple dancing. While having learnt from the classics, from Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz roots, showing admiration and gratitude they also look for expressing their own interpretation and voice always adjusting their individual moves to each other.

Although working on the dynamics from both roles, they believe in initiating the movement from the body as a whole; as one unit. Body awareness is one of the foundations that enables them to develop and work on a continuous and flow of movements, adding rhythmical contrasts.

Their objective is to find different ways to understand movement and rhythm changes in order to apply it to Swing music and give way to playful interpretations. What they believe is that the more open we are to learn and explore, the more freedom we can feel to fill the dance with personal characteristics united with the partner and enjoy the swing songs together.
