7:30PM – 10:00PM – DENYS BAPTISTE LATE TRANE QUARTET, LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL – The Capstone Theatre

Denys Baptiste – saxophones , Nikki Yeoh – piano, Larry Bartley – bass , Rod Youngs – drums

Born in London of St Lucian parents in 1969, Denys studied music at school from the age of 13 and, in 1990, went on to study at the West London Institute (Brunel University). In 1992, he continued his music education at London’s Guildhall School of Music, studying under former Jazz Messenger, Jean Toussaint.

From the moment he joined the London jazz circuit, Denys displayed extraordinary talent, energy and commitment. Spotted by veteran Jazz Warriors double bassist, Gary Crosby at the bassist’s regular Tomorrow’s Warriors jam sessions, Denys was immediately invited to join Crosby’s new band, Nu Troop. Since then, Denys has soared in his development as a soloist and bandleader, earning enormous respect from his peers.

His colossal talent – based on a powerful technique and an ability to improvise fluently and effortlessly across a wide range of musical styles – is matched only by his unfettered energy which takes him and his audiences into the musical stratosphere. An evening with Denys guarantees a display of unsuppressed expression, ranging from sweet “saxuality” to breathtaking, edge-of-your-seat virtuosity. Over the years, Denys has evolved into what the Time Magazine describes as “the icon of British jazz”, with a most distinctive and immediately recognisable sound.

A much sought after soloist, Denys has played/recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz and other genres including McCoy Tyner, Andrew Hill, Ernest Ranglin, Bheki Mseleku, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Michael Bowie, Courtney Pine, Manu Dibango, Gary Crosby, Steve Williamson, Julian Joseph, Jason Rebello, Martin Taylor, Lonnie Plaxico, Ralph Moore, Billy Higgins, Jerry Dammers, Sean Oliver, Jean Carne, Marlena Shaw, Noel McCoy, Juliet Roberts, Incognito, Jazz Jamaica, and others of distinction.

Tonight’s concert features tracks from Denys’ latest album The Late Trane. Denys reimagines and reworks ten carefully chosen compositions from John Coltrane’s late music (from 1963 – 1967) with a fresh and modern new interpretation, The Late Trane perfectly balances Baptiste’s unique artistic vision with the visceral emotions and cosmic references that encompasses Coltrane’s late music. The Late Trane received 4* review in the national and international press and was nominated for 2 Jazz FM awards.

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukeb...

New York City’s pop-jazz sensation, Postmodern Jukebox, are set to return to the UK, bringing their innovative twist on classic sounds and performing ‘today’s hits yesterday’.

Concertgoers can expect a dazzling, inspiring trip through the PMJ Universe – where modern-day earworms and iconic pop hits alike are reimagined in classic genres like 1920s jazz, Swing, Doo-wop and Motown, and brought to life by a cast of some of the world’s best singers, dancers and instrumentalists. Think The Great Gatsby meets Sinatra at the Sands meets Back! …To The Future.

When pianist Scott Bradlee started the time-twisting musical collective from a basement apartment in Queens, NY, an online, ‘viral’ success story was born – one that quickly led to sold out shows across North America and Europe in the summer of 2014.

The touring act received rave reviews from industry publications and world-renowned artists alike. In the years that followed, PMJ built a reputation as the ‘Saturday Night Live of Singers’ by introducing audiences to dozens of exceptional musical artists – many of whom had been previously overlooked by the modern record industry – and turning them into bonafide stars.

Ten years and two billion views on their YouTube channel later, a Postmodern Jukebox show has become something of an annual musical tradition for hundreds of thousands of dedicated fans all over the world – fans that often show up dressed to the nines in their vintage best, eager to immerse themselves in the experience.

Girls Don’t Play Guitars

In Liverpool in 1963 the music world was exploding. Musical talent, attitude and the knowledge that you could be anything you wanted to be saw the city flooded with bands and singers who were headed to the top.

Standing tall amongst all of the boys was the World’s first all-girl rock ’n’ roll group. This is the untold true story of The Liverbirds!

From The Cavern to Hamburg’s Star Club Mary, Sylvia, Val and Pam did it on their terms, turning down Brian Epstein, hanging out with Jimi Hendrix and driving Chuck Berry wild.

This foot-stomping musical will be packed with all of the great 60s songs that shook The Cavern, including the Liverbirds smash hits Peanut Butter and Diddley Daddy.

Written by Ian Salmon (The Comeback Special) and Directed by Bob Eaton (Lennon) this is a show that will rock the Royal Court like never before!
