Yeats to Music: a joyful concert by Br...

Sparkling voices, bright melodies and WB Yeats’s greatest poems; they all come together in Yeats to Music.

The performers are a bunch of charming Belgians who love Irish poetry. So much so, they released an album of 10 original songs, based on poems by Yeats. So, rise and go. Celebrate the centenary of Yeats being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature with Brandies Band and the wonderful voices of Factor 7. Sing along with the chorus of Words; be touched by Never Give all the Heart and clap along with The Song of Wandering Aengus.

No better way to round off the weekend than attending this joyful concert.

The Halcyon Syncopators

It’s been a while, but The Halcyon Syncopators are back. The community big band are playing a special autumn show at Sefton Park Cricket Club.

Illapu

One of Chile’s most celebrated and successful groups – and pioneers of ‘Folklore Andino’, a blend of traditional Andean Folk music with more modern sounds and rhythms – Illapu have had a storied career stretching back over 50 years, in turn soundtracking the fortunes of their homeland for the past half century.

Formed in 1971, in Antofagasta (Northern Chile), Illapu first achieved national acclaim in 1976 with one of their most beloved songs, “Candombe Para Jose”; but by 1980 had fallen foul of the Pinochet regime and were forced into exile. Their 1993 LP “En Estos Dias” – recorded soon after their return – went on to become one of the country’s highest selling albums ever.

This sole UK date has been made possible by Liverpool’s own LUMA CREATIONS, and forms an integral part of this year’s Chile 50 programme – marking the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile which saw the death of the democratically elected president, Salvador Allende, the murder of thousands of Chileans, and the forced exile of hundreds of thousands more. The leader of the coup, General Augusto Pinochet ruled Chile from 1973-1990 with an iron fist, overseeing concentration camps throughout the country and a litany of other human rights abuses. Chile 50 commemorates all those who were lost, fought or displaced and celebrates half a century of solidarity and resistance.

Jill Andrews

As a ten-year-old, Jill Andrews would slide Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation into her tape deck, jump up onto the bed, knot her t-shirt at the waist, and start jamming. Just a few years later, Andrews was on tour, singing, writing, and playing with one the nation’s fastest rising Americana groups.

From her years in alt-folk band The Everybodyfields, to her critically acclaimed solo career, to her latest collaboration, Hush Kids, which she co-founded with Nashville songwriter and producer, Peter Groenwald, Andrews has delivered irresistibly melodic, genre-bending music for nearly two decades.

Anchored by frank songwriting but continuously and unapologetically evolving, Andrews’ tape deck currently hosts a range of influences from Joni Mitchell to Diana Ross to Wilco to contemporaries, Brandi Carlile and Phoebe Bridgers. The result is bold, infectious, introspective music that has served as the backdrop to some of America’s most beloved television series including Grey’s AnatomyThis Is UsNashville, and Wynnona Earp, to which she composed the theme.
