Henry Priestman and John Reilly

After a sold out show in 2019, Henry Priestman and John Reilly return to the Philharmonic Hall Music Room with another exceptional night of original music, from two of the most inspirational wordsmiths of the modern age.

Joined by their long-term collaborators, the evening will be a wonderful mix of musical styles that complement each other beautifully.

In 2009, Henry Priestman (who wrote hits for Yachts in the 70s and for The Christians in the 80s) reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter, releasing his debut solo album Chronicles of Modern Life to critical acclaim, followed by Last Mad Surge of Youth in 2014, another critically-acclaimed record.

Liverpool born, Sheffield based singer-songwriter John Reilly has had airplay on BBC Radio 2 and radio stations around the world. He has sold 250,000 records both with his band Boy on a Dolphin, and during his solo career. Playing songs from his three solo albums, plus Boy on a Dolphin favourites, Reilly’s live shows are an intimate and spiritual experience not to be missed.

John Reilly’s Canadian co-writer and pianist Lewis Nitikman has produced, played and written three gold albums in Canada. He has played with various bands, including The Beach Boys, The Guess Who, The Dooby Brothers and Def Leopard.

Alongside working with Henry Priestman, in 2021 Les Glover joined Dan Powell’s (Slade) side project Don Powell’s Occasional Flames and released their wonderful debut album Just My Cup of Tea. Onstage Henry and Les manage to mix poignancy, chaos, laughter, and tears in equal measures.

ABC

To celebrate 40 years since the release of their lauded and timeless debut album The Lexicon of Love, ABC will perform the iconic album in its entirety.

ABC, fronted by Martin Fry, were formed in Sheffield in the 1980’s when they decided they wanted to fuse the world of disco funk with their own unique post punk vision. Since forming, ABC have released 9 studio albums, including their debut album The Lexicon Of Love, which sold over a million records. 36 years later, they returned with their resounding triumph, The Lexicon Of Love II, which immediately entered into the top 5.

Martin Fry’s masterpiece The Lexicon Of Love went straight to number one upon release. Fusing dance floor finesse with a post-punk attitude, the album spawned timeless tracks such ‘Poison Arrow’, ‘The Look Of Love’, ‘Tears Are Not Enough’, and ‘All Of My Heart’. The album saw ABC enchant the world with their own unique brand of pop and remains one of the best albums of all time.

Worldwide hits and several studio albums later, ABC demonstrate that even now 40 years on, Martin Fry’s song-writing and musicianship is still as contemporary as it was in the beginning.

Lucy Railton & Beau Beaumont Live

Metal is proud to host internationally renowned cellist and composer Lucy Railton and emerging sound artist Beau Beaumont.

Lucy Railton is one of the best recognised names in classical and experimental music as a performer, composer and programmer. Having co-founded London Contemporary Music Festival and Kammer Klang in 2013 and 2008 respectively Lucy has gone on to working with numerous artists around the world as well as producing solo pieces that bring together electronics, field recordings and classical instrumentation.

Her discography includes debut album Paradise 94 (Modern Love, 2018), an improvised duet with keyboardist Kit Downes recorded in Skálholt Cathedral, Iceland (Subaerial, SN Variations, 2021), and a collaboration with legendary synthesizer inventor and composer Peter Zinovieff (RFG Inventions for Cello and Computer, PAN, 2019).

In early 2020 Lucy produced 5 S-Bahn (Boomkat Editions), a series of cello recordings outside of a Berlin train station, capturing and responding to the changing audio environment under lockdown. Lucy also works across disciplines having worked with choreographer Akram Khan, theatre director Sasha Milavic Davies, and film director John Lee, and recently recorded cello for Does Spring Hide Its Joy? by Kali Malone, exhibited at the Hydraulic Tower in Birkenhead for Abandon Normal Devices.

Event

Beau Beaumont is a sound artist and composer, using field recordings, experimental synthesis and collaboration with musicians to explore deep listening and our relationship with movement.

Location and music are strongly linked in all aspects of Beau’s work, from hosting ‘Meine Nacht’ events in various secret locations in Liverpool to recording journeys, contested spaces and setting up her studio in a disused shopping centre. Her debut record, Trahere (Superpang) was released earlier this year, documenting the historic Liverpool to Manchester trainline using bespoke microphones to picking up ground movement.
