Wirral Borough of Culture 2024 Grants for arts, culture and heritage projects

Wirral is Borough of Culture for the Liverpool City Region in 2024 and we’ve developed an exciting programme in collaboration with creative organisations and individuals.

The impact of Wirral’s first year as Borough of Culture in 2019 was immense. Over half a million people took part. It also laid the foundations for a new chapter for Wirral’s creative sector. New cultural venues opened their doors as a result. Increasing numbers of artists, makers and creatives are calling Wirral home.  Our aim is to create a similar long-lasting impact from Wirral Borough of Culture 2024.

This year’s programme will allow us to show how culture plays a role in creating places we want to live, work and spend time in. This year will give us a platform to tell Wirral’s story. It will reflect where we’ve been and where we’re going.

As part of Borough of Culture, we’re committed to making arts, culture and heritage accessible to all during the year and we are making grants available for projects across the borough. We want to celebrate all artforms and the creativity, people and places that make Wirral unique.

These grants are made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and with support from Wirral Council.

If you are a creative or a member of a group or organisation who can help us tell Wirral’s story during this special year and into the future, these grants are for you.

Artist Residency – Audley Space, Super Slow Way, closes 15 Mar

We are looking for an artist to work with the local community in Higher Audley, Blackburn, over the spring and summer of 2024.

The space, alongside the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, was the site of Higher Audley Cotton Mill until it was demolished in the 1970’s, leaving the space to become overgrown and neglected.

In the past three years a band of volunteers have cleared the site to create a green oasis in this otherwise urban environment and to grow a field of flax as part of the Homegrown/Homespun project, which is hand spinning and weaving linen to create garments as a cottage industry in Blackburn.

Last year the volunteers uncovered the cobbled mill wharf, installing a pontoon for canoeing and a ‘pop up’ caf , as well as running a weekly gardening club. We are now looking for an artist who can work with the volunteers and the local community to continue to improve the site and create new experiences over the summer on a weekly basis.

We would hope the artist is available to attend our Spring Programme Launch on Saturday 13th April.

  • If you’d like to know more, visit the site or submit your proposal, please email Ben Pearson at ben@superslowway.org.uk
  • You can contact us if you have any communication support needs.
  • We’re happy to talk about alternative ways for you to tell us about your idea.
  • The deadline for submissions is Friday 15th March 2024.
  • Please give us a brief description of your idea and proposed timeline, with examples of previous work (or links to media) and a budget, including day rate and additional costs. Please keep this to two pages or less.
  • The maximum budget is £4,000 inclusive of materials and travel costs.
  • We expect the project to be delivered by the end of September 2024.

New photography competition to celebrate and raise funds for Port Sunlight

A new photography competition has been launched to celebrate the heritage, landscape and people of the unique village of Port Sunlight, often seen as one of the most photogenic villages in the North West.

Photographers of all levels of experience are being invited to submit their snaps taken in and around the Wirral village, which is one of the finest examples of an industrial worker village in the world.

Port Sunlight is famous for being built by William Lever from 1888 to provide sanitary and beautiful housing for ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory workers. It was recently named as one of the UK’s best towns and villages to visit in a Which? survey of over 9,000 people.

Entries to the Port Sunlight Photographer of the Year competition will be judged by international press photographers Pete Ellis and Bruce Adams, with the winners featuring in a new calendar. There will also be a runner-up prize.

Organised by Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT), the competition will help to raise funds for the charity to conserve the village’s significant monuments. This includes one of the largest war memorials in the country, as well as a boating pond which needs repair and is home to a bronze fountain designed by Sir Charles Wheeler, who also designed one of Trafalgar Square’s bronze sculptures.

The competition is open for entries until Monday 15 April, 11.30am (GMT) and costs £15 to enter. Entrants can submit up to four photographs taken since January 2022.

Jean Milton, Director of Heritage at Port Sunlight Village Trust, said: “Port Sunlight has long attracted photographers thanks to its picturesque architecture and green spaces, and now we want to celebrate that with this new competition. Not only will our Photographer of the Year shine a spotlight on this special village, but the competition will directly support our work to look after Port Sunlight for future generations to enjoy visiting, living and taking photographs here.”

Event

Bruce Adams, competition judge and Board Member of The British Press Photographers’ Association, said: “Port Sunlight is such unique spot for all visitors and for those privileged to live there. Paul Ellis and myself are really looking forward to judging the entries and seeing what inspiration can be brought from such a special place.”

PSVT has also announced a new exhibition by The British Press Photographers’ Association is coming to the village. Between 8 June – 1 September 2024, ‘Assignments 2024’ will travel from London to Wirral for the first time and will showcase the best of press photography last year.
